"abstractNote": "Purpose. Clinical psychology may not be making full use of the experimental psychological research available to it. The purpose of this article is to review the literature on cognitive dissonance in order to assess its usefulness in developing and deconstructing clinical psychological therapies and practice. Methods. Experimental, theoretical and review articles were examined in relation to their possible clinical implications, and included in this review if they related to the arousal, maintenance and reduction of the state termed cognitive dissonance. Well replicated findings based on experimentally sound paradigms were integrated to produce an overall view of the evidence in favour of the existence of these processes, and of the principles behind them. Results. It is concluded that there is an effect on attitudes and behaviour of creating inconsistency in individuals, and that this is not explained away by alternative theories, which in many cases refer to special conditions which maximally arouse dissonance. The dissonant state lasts for a few minutes, but its effects can last for up to two weeks, and might be reinstated by reintroducing the original inconsistency. Individuals can react to dissonance through a variety of cognitive alterations which reinstate consistency. The choice of response is a function of its salience and the difficulty in its execution. Conclusions. The literature supports the existence of the phenomenon termed cognitive dissonance, and one can distil the principles underlying its production, maintenance and reduction. This body of literature may provide insights into the conduct of therapy generally, as well as into the mechanisms of specific therapies which may guide modifications or development of alternative interventions.",

"abstractNote": "In this chapter, the authors argue that outcome measures such as attitude change (or other ostensibly effective dissonance-reduction strategies, such as bolstering, self affirmation or trivialization) cannot provide evidence of the process assumptions of dissonance theory because such measures are silent regarding underlying processes. Thus, the methods most commonly used to test dissonance assumptions are limited in what they can reveal about the nature of the dissonance and whether dissonance-reduction strategies are effective in alleviating dissonance-related distress. Our position is that dissonance theorists have asked too much of attitude change (and other outcome measures). We suggest that more thorough and complete testing of dissonance theory may be possible if we expand our methodological tools in the assessment of dissonance. To this end, we offer one such tool, a measure of self-reported affect (the dissonance thermometer), and provide evidence supporting the efficacy of it as a measure that is sensitive to both dissonance induction and reduction. "abstractNote": "While numerous studies used the theory of cognitive dissonance to explain consumer behavior, there is no study as of today that has applied the theory to the service industry to investigate the role of cognitive dissonance in influencing important marketing-related variables such as perceived value and trust. This study examines the relationship between cognitive dissonance and relationship variables (trust and value) and proposes a model to understand how consumers process information facing a negative word-of-mouth (WOM) message that is incongruent with their existing belief, along with how cognitive dissonance affects their behaviors. The proposed model is tested using data collected via mail survey on customers of hotel–motel organizations. The study finding suggests that the theory of cognitive dissonance can be extended beyond a postdecision situation to a service context to explain how customers process information facing a WOM message that is incongruent with their existing belief. It is shown that cognitive dissonance is a predominant predictor of repatronage behavior, even for satisfied customers.",

"abstractNote": "The theory of cognitive dissonance [1] concentrates on creating knowledge about important psychological processes of individuals. Specifically, it focuses on the relationships among cognitions that are elements of knowledge that people have about their behaviors, attitudes, perceptions, beliefs, feelings, or environments. Since human nature is the main subject of all social sciences, the theory has awakened interest and led to significant research in different academic domains. This study makes a thorough analysis of the theory's application in psychology, management, and marketing fields with an aim to assess the contribution of the theory to the development of knowledge in these areas. It is observed that the theory is commonly used by marketers to explain consumer behavior while its adoption in the management field to examine human related issues is considerably underdeveloped. Accordingly, the aim of this paper is to extend the literature on cognitive dissonance by discovering the under-investigated areas and pave the way for further theoretical and empirical research. Identification of existing gaps and suggestions for further scholarly inquiries are also believed to contribute to the recent efforts to regenerate interest to topic and to boost its generalizability through its greater utilization in the development of knowledge.",
