            "abstractNote": "Motor vehicles represent one of the widely owned assets in the US. A vehicle’s ownership cost includes fixed expenses to purchase and own the vehicle and variable costs to use and operate the vehicle. Policymakers, analysts and consumers are interested in understanding the total ownership costs of various vehicle types and technologies so as to understand their relative consumer preference and valuation. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are an advanced technology vehicle that is presently in limited production, but whose relative cost of ownership is not well-defined. A few studies have attempted to calculate the costs and benefits of PHEVs but none consider the cost and benefits of PHEVs at a level of detail comparable to what has been performed for other vehicle technologies. In order to understand the costs and benefits of PHEVs purchase and use, this study constructs a comprehensive ownership cost model. The model is then used to analyze different PHEV designs within four vehicle classes. This study then performs a sensitivity analysis to understand the sensitivity of total ownership cost and payback period to model parameters and the modeled components of ownership costs. Results show that a more comprehensive PHEV ownership cost model has a lower net cost of ownership than studies to date, resulting in a shorter payback period and higher consumer preference.",

            "abstractNote": "Automated vehicles (AVs) are increasingly recognized as having the potential to decrease carbon dioxide emissions and petroleum consumption through mechanisms such as improved efficiency, better routing, and lower traffic congestion, and by enabling advanced technologies. However, AVs also have the potential to increase fuel consumption through effects such as longer distances traveled, increased use of transportation by underserved groups, and increased travel speeds. Here we collect available estimates for many potential effects and use a modified Kaya Identity approach to estimate the overall range of possible effects. Depending on the specific effects that come to pass, widespread AV deployment can lead to dramatic fuel savings, but has the potential for unintended consequences.",

            "abstractNote": "Researchers around the world are developing sustainable plant-based liquid transportation fuels (biofuels) to reduce petroleum consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Algae are attractive because they promise large yields per acre compared to grasses, grains and trees, and because they produce oils that might be converted to diesel and gasoline equivalents. It takes considerable energy to produce algal biofuels with current technology; thus, the potential benefits of algal biofuels compared to petroleum fuels must be quantified. To this end, we identified key parameters for algal biofuel production using GREET, a tool for the life-cycle analysis of energy use and emissions in transportation systems. The baseline scenario produced 55 400 g CO2 equivalent per million BTU of biodiesel compared to 101 000 g for low-sulfur petroleum diesel. The analysis considered the potential for greenhouse gas emissions from anaerobic digestion processes commonly used in algal biofuel models. The work also studied alternative scenarios, e.g., catalytic hydrothermal gasification, that may reduce these emissions. The analysis of the nitrogen recovery step from lipid-extracted algae (residues) highlighted the importance of considering the fate of the unrecovered nitrogen fraction, especially that which produces N2O, a potent greenhouse gas with global warming potential 298 times that of CO2.",

            "abstractNote": "Macro economic studies of the costs of reducing CO2 emissions generally estimate the global cost of stabilising the atmospheric concentrations of CO2 in the range 350–550 ppm in trillions of USD. This creates the impression that the cost of CO2 reductions is so large that it threatens economic development. But, presented in another way, a completely different picture emerges. There is widespread agreement amongst the more pessimistic macro economic studies that stringent carbon controls are compatible with a significant increase in global and regional economic welfare. Even if the cost of CO2 abatement rises to 5% of global income per year by the end of this century, this reduction is minor compared with the tenfold increase in global income that is expected. Since income is assumed to grow by a couple of percent per year, the trillion USD cost could also be expressed as a few years delay in achieving an order of magnitude higher income levels. Similar observations can also be made as regards near-term abatement targets such as the Kyoto protocol. A more widespread recognition of the fact that carbon abatement policies will only marginally affect economic growth is likely to increase the willingness to introduce carbon abatement policies.",
