That day may not be too far off, thanks to the steady flow of technological whisperings emanating from labs where the future has already been built and is now just biding its time, awaiting a market. You only need to take a glimpse at the Microsoft Office Labs Vision 2019 video to get an idea of what technology is waiting in the wings. But every now and again, a bit of the future gets out early, usually in Japan, but occasionally also on someone's blog or via an academic's YouTube clip. Here are five technologies, all with a practical application, that could be appearing on your media schedule in the not-too-distant future: 1. touchable holography, 2. gesture-based interfaces, 3. 3D teleconferencing, 4. 3D printing, and 5. virtualization gates.",

"abstractNote": "Imagine storing 20,000 X-ray images on a disk the size of a credit card. That is one grand promise stirring up the buzz over holographic storage for the enterprise. Hal Weiss, systems engineer with Baptist Memorial Healthcare in Memphis, TN, is one user following the holographic storage buzz. Analysts and enterprise users such as Weiss see a future in holographic disk technologies as archival, long-term storage media. Not everyone is sold on the potential of holographic storage. To address the proprietary issue, Optware, FujiFilm and CMC Magnetics, among others, formed the Holographic Versatile Disk Alliance to work on standardization. And, in January, Optware submitted its technology to industry association Ecma International as the basis of a proposed standard.",
