} ], "abstractNote": "An urban metabolism framework can be used to assess urbans ustainability. Conventionally, the framework analyzes direct material, energy and waste flows associated with urban environments to understand the consequent energy and environmental impacts of these flows. However, the conventional framework has at least three serious deficiencies if urban metabolism studies are to inform policy — namely the use of highly aggregated data lacking geographic specificity, the exclusion of life cycle impacts, and the absence of key urban metabolic processes, such as economic flows.\nThis study expands the existing framework of urban metabolism to address each of these limitations in turn, and ultimately pilots researchers’\nmethods in Los Angeles County. First, researchers develop a multi disciplinary analytical framework that accounts for both direct and embodied energy and emissions associated with economic activities within the county. Second, researchers include upstream material, energy and waste flows by applying a life cycle assessment framework. Third, researchers use highly granular data, enabling improved assessment of associations between energy use and socio-demographic indicators within the study area.\nThe multidisciplinary framework developed in this study integrates activity-based modeling of land use, transportation and commodity flows;\ndisaggregated data on flows of electricity, fossil fuels, retailed water, solid waste, and air emissions; process-based life cycle assessment of material and energy embedded in buildings, roadways and parking infrastructure; and economic input - output life cycle assessment of commercial and industrial establishments. Researchers draw on a range of public and confidential datasets to develop this analysis. Finally, researchers overlay these data with spatially explicit socio-demographic information to\nlink economic, environmental, and social sustainability outcomes. Archiving and distributing these geospatial data generally become the responsibility of local universities and federal research centers with few resources dedicated to the task. The developments in archiving and distributing geospatial data are presented through the description and discussion of three interconnected case studies of data preservation at government and academic units in southeastern Arizona. The main challenges were associated with data archiving, developing online data distribution systems, interconnecting the data distribution systems, and sustaining the archiving and distribution systems. The case studies present multiple approaches to meeting these challenges within the constraints of government and academic units.
