Physical exhaustion and hazards to health and life took a heaVy toll. Economic factors palyed an important part in both success and failure in homesteading or in successfully completing an extended sales contract for the purchase of land. About 43 percent of those trying to get land in Nebraska under the Homestead Act failed. However, it seems probable that the rate of failure was nearly as high for those purchasing under extended contracts. During the formative years of settlement in the second half of the 19th century, women played an integral role in assuring family survival by working outdoors, usually in a harsh and challenging environment. As time passed, however, women assumed roles within the home, thus redefining their roles within the family and changing their relationship to the natural world. New conveniences such as sewing and washing machines encouraged women to return to traditional domestic roles. The scientific housekeeping movement, promoted across the land by the media and government extension agents, also redefined women's roles and altered their views and uses of the land. The focus is Nebraska's North Platte Valley and Colorado's South Platte Valley. The Great Western Sugar Company and the American Sugar Company owned much of the land and recruited cheap labor from among immigrant populations, usually paying their railway passage west. These companies recruited gang labor on contract, primarily single males, but also women and children. Problems associated with child labor included poor attendance at school, physical injuries, and exploitative pay and labor practices. Child labor was gradually phased out with mechanization and the passage of the Jones-Costigan Act (1934) and the Sugar Act (1937), which limited subsidies to farmers who used child laborers.
