reactions to conflict with health care providers and the outcomes of the conflicts. This study builds on previous research that confirmed the occurrence and sources of conflict among these informants. Seventeen parents whose children had a diagnosis of cancer were interviewed in this study. A priori coding was used to identify the specific strategies for dealing with conflict proposed by Rubin and associates. Ginsburg’s approach to narrative analysis was used to examine parent’s stories. Findings were that parents used the strategies of problem solving, yielding, withdrawing, inaction, and contending identified by Rubin and associates in reaction to conflict with health care providers. Following episodes of contending, many parents in the study reframed the conflict and experienced transformations or turning points, resolving to become more effective advocates for their children. This particular murder, exceptionally, prompted widespread re-examination of questions of (in)justice, cultural identity and continuing racism in British society and it eventually initiated processes of institutional reflexivity including government policies targeting institutionalized racism within Britain’s most powerful organizations of state and civil society. The Stephen Lawrence case unfolded within the arenas and processes of the criminal justice system, but the public story of ‘Stephen Lawrence’, the central concern of this article, was principally played out within the nation’s media (and some international media too). It was here that the symbolic and moral charge of the case became generalized outwards to different publics in society, galvanizing emotions and appealing to a sense of moral solidarity subjunctively oriented to how society should or could be. The article discusses the social significance of this sports drama, namely, the oppositional cultural values of loyalty and equality versus winning and money. This article attempts to complement this perspective by assuming a metaphor of consulting as a liminal space. Liminality is a condition where the usual practice and order are suspended and replaced by new rites and rituals. We build on the anthropological analyses of Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner to find theoretical support for the idea of liminality as applied to the consulting activity. This article is based on our experience as consultants and observers. It collects on-the-job reflections - ours and those of other consultants we have met. Prior research on PhD experiences used time to explain the doctorate in terms of the different lengths of time involved when comparing different disciplines and scientific areas of study (Bourdieu, 1983; Atkinson, 2000). To date, the PhD has not been considered as a genuine time experience. I intend to do so by bearing in mind the insights provided by time sociology frameworks. Thus, in this article it is assumed that respondents’ understanding of their PhD time as ‘a phase’ translates a deep experience of liminality, in which they understand themselves on the one hand as belonging simultaneously to a ‘now’ and a ‘then’ and, on the other, as being located in a linear temporal structure. Judith Gundry Volf's topical-exegetical method is one example. This article argues that the content of Paul's description of the Israelites in the wilderness focuses upon the notions of apostasy and eschatol ogy. As a point of departure, a cultural anthropological approach is used to illuminate 1 Cor. 10.1-12. Paul presupposes a Jewish apocalyptic understanding of eschatology in the language of the Israelites' journey through the wilderness, and the apostle's perspective is compared with the liminal processes of pilgrimages and rites of passage as discussed by cultural anthropologist Victor Turner. In light of this perspective, Paul is warning the Corinthian congregation that, although they had been initiated into the body of Christ through a separation process that was prefigured in Israel's
