Les premières\nétudes remontent à Loche (1858) ; il a fallu attendre le milieu des années 1970 pour voir apparaître plusieurs\ncontributions, dont celles de François (1975), Kérautret (1976), Leberre et Rostan (1976), ou Metzmacher\n(1976). Jacob et Courbet (1980) qui ont précisé le statut de quelques espèces d’oiseaux de mer sur l’ensemble du\nlittoral, et Jacob (1983) celui des laridés hivernants en Algérie. Ce sont de bons indicateurs biologiques notamment en ce qui concerne l’état des milieux et de la qualité des ressources trophiques marines. Certaines espèces, tels que les Puffins, les Cormorans huppés sont présentes exclusivement dans des milieux peu perturbés par l’homme et atteste de la bonne qualité de l’environnement côtier. D’autres tels que les Goélands leucophées peuvent indiquées une dégradation du milieu dans le cas ou ils deviennent surabondant. Les oiseaux côtiers et marins peuvent donc très bien intégrer un projet de gestion et de conservation des milieux côtiers et marins du Parc national de Taza, dans une perspective de création d’une aire marine protégée. Les travaux relatifs aux oiseaux de mer qui fréquentent la côte à l’ouest de Jijel ne sont pas trop fournis. L’unique étude qui mérite d’être citée, est celle de JACOB et COURBET (1980) qui dans le cadre de leur travail sur les oiseaux de mer nicheur de la côte algérienne. Ils ont visité les deux îles de Grand Cavallo (El –Aouana) et de Petit Cavallo (Andreu).
