"abstractNote": "Historical and comparative research shows that the roots of andragogy are deeper than certain contemporary authors mean. The learning and education of adults have always been integral parts of human activity and of human aspirations to learn. Theoretical discourses on pedagogy vs andragogy were common during the second half of the twentieth century in the former Yugoslavia. Two schools of thought were formed: pedagogical and andragogical. The first considered pedagogy as an 'integral' science of upbringing; the second one considered andragogy to be a relatively independent science dealing with distinctions of learning and education of adults. There were interesting discussions on andragogy in other countries. The greatest numbers of supporters of the concept of andragogy as a social scientific discipline (or under another name) come from Central and Eastern Europe and from the USA. One pervasive and persisting issue is the reaction between subject matter, i.e., what is to be taught, and teaching methodology, i.e., how it is to be taught. The paper discusses and illustrates interactive teaching principles, methods, and skills such as creating a climate and providing structure for collaborative learning, dealing with obstacles to collaborative learning, and helping students to experience, operationalize, and build abstractions. This short report presents these differing characteristics and the steps taken to cater for them in the Discipline of Psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand using an autoethnographic approach (Ellis & Bochner, 2003). These reflections are discussed within the context of andragogy (Knowles, 1980), transformative learning theory (Mezirow, 1997), and situated cognition theory (Caffarella & Merriam, 1999). An understanding of andragogy has fundamentally changed the author as a teacher because it has informed his teaching methods and expanded and harnessed his teaching skills. He would argue that there is a natural bridge between his expanding knowledge of learning styles and the way in which he has matured as an andragogical educator. The term \"andragogy\" has become associated with a particular approach to adult education. The term was originally coined by a German educationalist, Alexander Kapp, in 1833.",

Grounded theory and a pilot study were used to guide our research. The key findings of our research were (i) an elucidation of the goals that drive individuals to improve or share knowledge with others and (ii) the high level concept categories of life-cycles provided us with the basis for a model which characterises formation of, and participation in, informal learning communities. Indeed, the high level concept categories that emerged as strongly supported in our analysis point to the need for interdisciplinary theorising in this area. In this paper, we will: (a) give a summary of what we mean by informal community eLearning, (b) illustrate the key issues with results from a study of UK online centres, and (c) make recommendations for future theorising and research directions.\n[Copyright &y& Elsevier]",

He presents the benefits that he gained in working on both AE and HRD international works. According to him, his international AE and HRD works have taken him to 30 different journeys to 14 countries. The countries where he had worked and the learner organizations with whom he worked with are also mentioned. One of his interesting international projects is the research and the publication of the theory, research, and practice of andragogy, the art and science of helping adults learn. The lessons that he learned from his international works and his suggestions for those who are interested to get involved in international adult education are also presented.",

"abstractNote": "Critical race theory (CRT) was developed to examine the persistence of racism. This literature review attempts to understand CRT as it has been applied in related fields such as higher education and possible reasons for its limited application in adult education theorizing about race and racism. This analysis of CRT is framed against a backdrop of the evolution of an adult education discourse on race and racism over several decades and distinguishes CRT from other racial theories that have been used in the field. CRT tenets are discussed using examples that demonstrate how CRT reveals areas of racism left untouched by other forms of theorizing. The author provides a critique of CRT, caveats for those adult educators who might choose to use it, and examples of areas within the field of adult education that might benefit from a CRT lens. The article outlines and places these dispositions within the context of debates over social justice and dispositions for education program accreditation in the United States that often directly impact adult education graduate programs. These dispositions are then demonstrated in historical and contemporary adult education practice. The article argues that these dispositions have increasing relevance given the growing polarization of wealth and poverty and environmental destruction facing humanity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]",

"abstractNote": "This article offers a critical analysis of discourses and power structures and the ways they operate in two instructors' adult education and ESOL classrooms. The instructors defined learner experience in specific ways and subsequently used those definitions and drew on their learners' experiences to define their curricula and pedagogy. They conceptualized learner experiences in ways that potentially empowered or emancipated learners from existing power structures. The data presented are part of a two-year study of different lifelong learning and adult education contexts in the north-eastern and mid-western USA. Data sources included survey, interview, artifact collection, and observation methods. Data analysis was guided by a sociocultural theory of literacy development (The New London Group 1996, Gee 1996, 2003, Barton and Hamilton 1998), Holland et al.'s (1998) theories of figured worlds and identity development, Bakhtin's (1963, 1975, 1979, 1986) theory of dialogism, and Foucault's (1963, 1980) conceptualization of power. One instructor offered her learners a chance to empower themselves, that is, to find gratification by learning to appropriate mainstream ways of acting, thinking, believing, and using text. The discourse that promotes such instructional efforts is predominant in lifelong learning and adult education. In this discourse, referred to at the outset as one of coherence, learner experience, as a resource for language and literacy development, is essentialized as dispositional, meaning that correct or proper attitudes and beliefs are necessary for empowerment. The other instructor practised a reverse discourse, or what Gee (1996) referred to as a liberatory literacy. She positioned learners to critique the Discourses they encountered, including those they participated in, as movement toward emancipation, toward communicative competence or a critical stance in the world. In effect, learners reversed the panoptic framework and turned the gaze back upon existing power structures. In this case, learner experience was valued for the experiential positioning it offered learners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]",

Accordingly, the paper introduces why and how to use storytelling as a strategy that may lead to life changes for learners. It discusses the implications of using storytelling in adult education settings. It also highlights the importance of storytelling in delivering power that can motivate learners at any stage of development. Moreover, the six recursive processes where storytelling strategy progresses are presented and discussed.",

It states that the use of Ethical Decision Making (EDM) will help to respond ethical dilemmas using three factors, including values, considerations and consequences. Strategies that can also be helpful in promoting a climate for ethical practice in adult education are also discussed.",

The Exchange Structure Analysis technique was used to analyze the international online forum that has been participated by almost 30 different students and two professors affiliated in adult education programs in various universities in the U.S. and Germany. In the asynchronous format of instruction, teachers and students are not required to be involved at the same time and this approach allows people to interact with each other in their own time and place.",

"abstractNote": "This article is a 20-year retrospective on race and ethnicity in Adult Education. A brief historical synopsis of how Adult Education has examined race and ethnicity foregrounds a contemporary segment that reviews the existing situations of people of colour in Adult Education. It is imperative to first discuss Adult Education's past as regards race and ethnicity in order to properly situate the contemporary discussion. This status report focuses primarily on Blacks since other groups, such as Hispanics, Asians, and Native Americans, have been essentially absent from the literature. Research during the formative years of Adult Education in the 1930s and 1940s generally consisted of a neutral surface examination, while the current research of the 1980s and 1990s has a distinct social justice component sustained by a critical lens. The literature is virtually quiet on issues relating to race and ethnicity between the years of 1950 and 1980. Seven data sources were used in this appraisal. The following journals were surveyed, with particular attention placed on the last 20 years: Adult Education Quarterly, International Journal of Lifelong Education, Adult Literacy and Basic Education, and New Directions in Adult and Continuing Education. This critical analysis also included documents from the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), journal abstracts from the Current Index to Journals in Education, dissertations published in adult and continuing education, and the conference proceedings of the Standing Conference on University Teaching and Research in the Education of Adults (SCUTREA) and the Adult Education Research Conference (AERC). There has been a significant increase in research on minorities in Adult Education. For the most part, this research seems driven by the context of the present socio-political climate, and it is asserted that the movement towards examining race and ethnicity has been partially inspired by the increase of racial and ethnic group members as Adult Education professors, practitioners, and students in our classrooms and programmes. "abstractNote": "This study addresses the primary question, \"What instructional approaches typify adult literacy education in the United States?\" as well as several secondary questions. To address the primary question, a survey was developed and responses were received from 598 adult literacy teachers in 12 states. When the data were subjected to factor analysis, three main approaches to adult literacy instruction resulted. We named these approaches (a) meaning making, (b) basic skills/individualized group instruction, and (c) basic skills/teacher-led group. Further analysis found that most adult literacy instructors employ a blend of these approaches and that the approaches they use vary according to instructional level, organizational sponsorship, and enrollment pattern.
