Aristotle’s concept of “phronesis,” or practical wisdom, captures the scope of such knowledge but also points out the difficulties of representing practical knowledge apart from the context of exercise. This article argues that the artifacts, such as policies, programs, and procedures, that school leaders develop and use can serve as occasions to document the expression of phronesis in context. "In their article \"Scholars Before Researchers: On the Centrality of the Dissertation Literature Review in Research Preparation\", David N. Boote and Penny Beile argue that the literature review is the fundamental task of dissertation and research preparation. They claim that doctoral students receive minimal formal training, and little guidance from faculty or published sources, in how to analyze and synthesize research literature. As a result, they argue, most dissertation literature reviews are poorly conceptualized and written and \"Doctoral students may not be learning what it means to make and justify educational claims\". They conclude that \"Literature reviewing should be a central focus of predissertation coursework, integrated throughout the program\". In this article, the author provides his arguments on Boote and Beile's claims. Maxwell agrees with their assessment of the majority of dissertation literature reviews, and with their emphasis on the importance of learning to identify, analyze, and integrate research literature competently. However, he argues for a different conception of a dissertation literature review from Boote and Beile's, one focused on relevance rather than comprehensiveness, and one that sees this review as an essential component of research rather than the foundation for research. Much of this prior learning may, in fact, qualify for college credits, so many adults assemble portfolios and write learning narratives to demonstrate their learning and apply for credits. Despite their many skills and rich knowledge, however, adults are often unsure about their ability to establish their prior learning credentials (Arnold, 2010; Lambe, 2011). While adult learners can usually recall what they did in professional contexts or in the community, for example, they have difficulty culling significant elements from experience that relate to learning--identifying learning and making sense of it. Reflecting on past experience, the \"return to experience, attending to feelings, and reevaluation of experience\" (Boud, 2001, p. 14) is a way to discover what matters most to them and draw conclusions about meaning and learning. Having to reflect on their experiences often baffles adult learners because this expectation contradicts their view of formal learning, which assumes that \"real\" learning means acquiring disciplinary facts and concepts: \"declarative knowledge\" (Kurfiss, 1988, p. iv). For this reason, they may struggle recognizing the value of their prior knowledge. Such barrier to reflection can, however, be overcome by using the learning narrative as a vehicle to take a critical look at the past, by discovering failures as events that resulted in learning, and by confirming what they know. Design/methodology/approach - The paper is a mainly qualitative evaluation study of those involved with 12 graduates from a professional doctorate that uses an in-depth reflective and critical analysis of prior high level work based learning as its main product for assessment. In-depth semi-structured telephone interviews, focus group and questionnaires were used to gather data from candidates, their advisers and consultants, internal and external examiners, and chairs of their presentation. Findings - Findings included the development of understanding about work-based epistemologies by all the participants and changes in the candidates' understanding of their professional identity. The recognition of scholarliness and the evaluation and accreditation of professional knowledge was a key issue for external examiners. Research limitations/implications - As a small-scale evaluation case study the results are indicative and presented alongside experience of facilitating and assessing prior learning in this UK-based professional doctorate, in order to stimulate further discussion. Practical implications - APEL is a valuable and valued, student-centred learning and teaching method for experienced professionals that could provide a useful entrée to other pedagogies that develop a personal understanding of professional knowledge production and ability to reflect on practice. Originality/value - The paper provides some evidence for claims in the current literature that there is an important place for work-based knowledge in contemporary HE.
