However, during the first 10 years of the new millennium, the term TQM seems to have lost its attractiveness in Western parts of the world and instead new terms such as Business Excellence, Organisational Excellence, Six Sigma, and Lean seem to have overtaken the position even though the contents of these new terms can be understood within the framework of TQM. Through a literature survey the author reflects on the current status of the quality movement. Furthermore, the role of Japan is analysed under the term of 'Japanese morphogenesis' with an attached meaning of learning, renewing and improving ability. When the Japanese morphogenesis has been identified, the identified pattern is adopted as a framework for identifying and analysing the Western morphogenesis. By searching the underlying cognitive structures, and with an application of the identified morphogenesis in the history of quality management, it is possible to understand how Japan achieved the position of a world leader in quality, and also to understand 'the lost decades' from the beginning of the 1990s until today when the interest for TQM diminished. As a continuation of the previous research [Dahlgaard-Park, S.M. (1999). Oslo: Fagbook for laget], this article has included a discussion on the recent Toyota crisis with the massive withdrawals in 2010 used as an example of what happens when companies change their strategies from a 'customer first strategy' to a 'quantity first strategy'. This article, together with the selected articles in this special issue, addresses several critical issues and suggestions on possible solutions on how companies can escape stagnation and recover from the crisis. The SPC methodology is based on the analysis of variation in a system. The chapter explores the notions of variation and control, followed by a discussion of the tools used for evaluating SPC. It also takes a look at the construction of control charts and the use of the Pareto Principle for identifying the variables that most affect the system. The chapter then explores control charts in greater detail, looking at some of the different kinds of charts that can be used for analyzing SPC in the context of data quality. Finally, the chapter highlights that variations in data may happen because of common causes, but there may be special reasons as well. These variations help in building charts that are called control charts. These charts integrate data taken from a sample with control limits (both upper and lower). When the data points appear above the upper or below the lower control limit, it is an indication of a special cause. The integration of both concepts can represent a breakthrough in the final product performance, by creating the necessary conditions to decrease the variability of quality characteristics both in the short and long term. The integrated methodology was designed for the pulp and paper industry and was established in several phases. First, a mathematical model was developed to represent as much as possible the process dynamic behaviour. The transfer function obtained was then used to implement two components of the above mentioned concepts, namely controllers, based on the minimum variance criterion, and statistical control charts. At last, the two components were integrated into the process, which was submitted to several disturbances to ascertain the control achieved with the integration. The methodology was tested in a real industrial process of one of the most important pulp producers in the world and considered several scenarios. To illustrate the methodology, we present one of the scenarios that shows the benefits of EPC/SPC integration. Particular emphasis is placed on activities in Japan immediately following the end of the Second World War, and subsequent developments elsewhere in the world. We draw a careful distinction between Quality Management and various methodologies that aid in its implementation, such as Six Sigma. In the words of one management practitioner, Norbert Vogel, ‘TQM in its broadest sense examines all aspects of management and the alternative methodologies being promoted are merely sub-sets of what should be an integrated management system.’ The article concludes with some speculative thoughts about the future of Quality Management from a statistician's point of view. The Taguchi method is one of the conventional approaches for this purpose. Through this approach, engineers can determine a feasible combination of design parameters such that the variability of a product's response can be reduced and the mean is close to the desired target. The traditional Taguchi method was focused on ensuring good performance at the parameter design stage with one quality characteristic, but most products and processes have multiple quality characteristics. The optimal parameter design minimizes the total quality loss for multiple quality characteristics. Several studies have presented approaches addressing multiple quality characteristics. Most of these papers were concerned with maximizing the parameter combination of signal to noise (SN) ratios. The results reveal the advantages of this approach are that the optimal parameter design is the same as the traditional Taguchi method for the single quality characteristic; the optimal design maximizes the amount of reduction of total quality loss for multiple quality characteristics.
