"abstractNote": "Affect and its object are separable, so the same affective reaction can have different effects. Relevant principles from the affect-as-information approach include: first, the impact of affect depends on implicit attributions—what it appears to be about. Second, affect is always taken to be about whatever is currently mentally accessible. Affective reactions can therefore serve as appraisals of objects of judgment or of initial thoughts and opinions about such objects when they are more accessible. During problem solving, affect can serve as appraisals of thought style rather than thought content. Then, third, positive and negative affect serve as go and stop signals for current inclinations. Affective influences on cognition are therefore not fixed, but malleable and context-dependent.",

"abstractNote": "Is there an objective, biological basis for the experience of beauty in art? Or is aesthetic experience entirely subjective? Using fMRI technique, we addressed this question by presenting viewers, naïve to art criticism, with images of masterpieces of Classical and Renaissance sculpture. Employing proportion as the independent variable, we produced two sets of stimuli: one composed of images of original sculptures; the other of a modified version of the same images. The stimuli were presented in three conditions: observation, aesthetic judgment, and proportion judgment. In the observation condition, the viewers were required to observe the images with the same mind-set as if they were in a museum. In the other two conditions they were required to give an aesthetic or proportion judgment on the same images. Two types of analyses were carried out: one which contrasted brain response to the canonical and the modified sculptures, and one which contrasted beautiful vs. ugly sculptures as judged by each volunteer. The most striking result was that the observation of original sculptures, relative to the modified ones, produced activation of the right insula as well as of some lateral and medial cortical areas (lateral occipital gyrus, precuneus and prefrontal areas). The activation of the insula was particularly strong during the observation condition. Most interestingly, when volunteers were required to give an overt aesthetic judgment, the images judged as beautiful selectively activated the right amygdala, relative to those judged as ugly. We conclude that, in observers naïve to art criticism, the sense of beauty is mediated by two non-mutually exclusive processes: one based on a joint activation of sets of cortical neurons, triggered by parameters intrinsic to the stimuli, and the insula (objective beauty); the other based on the activation of the amygdala, driven by one's own emotional experiences (subjective beauty).",

"abstractNote": "The rule of thirds is a longstanding principle that helps artists and photographers to compose aesthetically pleasing images. Despite the rule’s wide use by photographers, little is known about its impact on viewers in particular to raise attention to the main subject and narrative of an image but also to possibly limit cognitive load. The findings of this exploratory, experimental study of undergraduate students at a U.S. university suggest that the rule of thirds serves as a geometric guiding structure that directs participants’ vision. The rule of thirds appears to enhance participants’ ease of information processing by raising attention to the predominant visual content of an image, making it more salient to the observer. Overall, the rule of thirds enabled a more correct recognition of the primary valence and the main subject or focus of interest of an image, indicating that participants may glean a better understanding of the intended message of an image. But findings also indicate significant differences between the rule of thirds composition and the placement of the main subject along the rule of thirds grid, suggesting the latter as being more effective.",

"abstractNote": "Previous studies have shown that people prefer objects with curved contours over objects with sharp contours. However, those studies used stimuli that were mainly neutral in emotional valence. We tested here the interplay between visual features and general valence as positive or negative. After replicating curvature preferences for neutral objects, we used positive (cake, chocolate) and negative (snake, bomb) stimuli to examine if emotional valenceˆthrough response prioritisationˆmodulates the preference for curved objects. We found that people indeed preferred the curved versions of objects to the sharp versions of the same objects, but only if the objects were neutral or positive in emotional valence. There were no difference in liking for objects with negative emotional valence. This is evidence that the aesthetic response is adaptive, in this case prioritising valence over contour as demanded by the general semantic classification.",
