"abstractNote": "We present recent advances on the massively parallel performance of a numerical scheme for atmosphere dynamics applications based on the deal.II library. The implicit-explicit discontinuous finite element scheme is based on a matrix-free approach, meaning that no global sparse matrix is built and only the action of the linear operators on a vector is actually implemented. Following a profiling analysis, we focus on the performance optimization of the numerical method and describe the impact of different preconditioning and solving techniques in this framework. Moreover, we show how the use of the latest version of the deal.II library and of suitable execution flags can improve the parallel performance.",

"abstractNote": "The Net Ecosystem Carbon Balance (NECB) is a crucial metric for understanding integrated carbon dynamics in Arctic and boreal regions, which are vital to the global carbon cycle. These areas are associated with significant uncertainties and rapid climate change, potentially leading to unpredictable alterations in carbon dynamics. This mini-review examines key components of NECB, including carbon sequestration, methane emissions, lateral carbon transport, herbivore interactions, and disturbances, while integrating insights from recent permafrost region greenhouse gas budget syntheses. We emphasize the need for a holistic approach to quantify the NECB, incorporating all components and their uncertainties. The review highlights recent methodological advances in flux measurements, including improvements in eddy covariance and automatic chamber techniques, as well as progress in modeling approaches and data assimilation. Key research priorities are identified, such as improving the representation of inland waters in process-based models, expanding monitoring networks, and enhancing integration of long-term field observations with modeling approaches. These efforts are essential for accurately quantifying current and future greenhouse gas budgets in rapidly changing northern landscapes, ultimately informing more effective climate change mitigation strategies and ecosystem management practices. The review aligns with the goals of the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP) and Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF), providing important insights for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders working to understand and protect these sensitive ecosystems.",

"abstractNote": "There is increasing evidence that atmospheric rivers (ARs) drive extreme precipitation and melt events across Antarctica and that these impacts are more accurately captured in high-resolution models. However, a comprehensive evaluation of AR impacts, comparing the performance of models with varying resolutions and physics across multiple AR events, has not yet been conducted. In this study, we simulate four recent AR events using the regional climate model HCLIM43 in its ALADIN (11 km) and AROME (11 km and 2.5 km) configurations, as well as ERA5 (31 km) and MERRA-2 (50 km), to analyze the dominant factors driving melt and precipitation and how spatial resolution and model physics affect surface impacts compared to observations. The events include intense snowfall and longwave radiation (Jun 2019), surface melt from foehn winds (Feb 2020), a large-scale heat anomaly driven by radiative and turbulent processes (Mar 2022), and inland surface warming after moisture is released by sea ice and ice shelves (Dec 2023). While all reanalyses and models underestimate surface warming and melt during these events, the high-resolution 2.5 km AROME configuration tends to simulate the most realistic precipitation and melt extents, largely due to its improved representation of foehn effects and reduced cloud biases. Longwave radiation generally dominates AR-induced warming, particularly over wider inland regions, while sensible heat fluxes are dominant in coastal and foehn-prone regions. Lastly, substantial differences among models/reanalyses in cloud phase and total cloud water paths underscore the need for improved cloud parameterizations and surface energy budget calculations.",

"abstractNote": "We investigate the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) in observations and in a large CMIP6 historical climate model ensemble. We compare four different definitions of the AMV aimed at extracting the variability intrinsic to the Atlantic region. They are based on removing from the Atlantic temperature the linear or polynomial trend, the part congruent to the global average, or the part congruent to the multimodel mean of the global average. The definitions agree on the well-known low-frequency oscillatory variability in observations but show larger differences for the models. In general, large differences between ensemble members are found. We estimate the forced response in the AMV as the mean of the multimodel ensemble. This response converges fast with the ensemble size and saturates for a size of around 25. The forced response resembles the observed low-frequency oscillatory variability for the detrended AMV definitions, but these definitions are also the most ineffective in removing the forced global mean signal. The forced response is very weak for the other definitions, and few of their individual ensemble members show oscillatory variability and even fewer with the observed phase. The observed spatial temperature pattern related to the AMV is well captured for all AMV definitions but is more confined for the definitions with the global means removed. These definitions also depend the least on the considered period. The observed instantaneous connection between NAO and AMV is well represented in the models for all definitions. Only nonsignificant evidence of NAO leading the AMV on decadal time scales is found.",

"abstractNote": "Space is a highly valued asset in cities. This is a key reason why nature-based solutions (NBS) for water management are often perceived to be more expensive than traditional grey solutions. However, the allocation of space also provides benefits relative to grey solutions. In a planning paradigm driven by cost-effectiveness, NBS implementation requires methods for quantifying these benefits in a standardized and easily applicable manner. Based on 114 stated-preference valuation studies of nature in urban areas and openly available geographic data from the developed world, we develop a predictive metamodel for the aggregate benefit value of urban nature, covering the entire range of NBS types with sizes from 0.5 to 900,000 ha. Using a cross-validation procedure, we compare the predictive performance of 8.4 million model permutations that consider different combinations of site properties and topographic and socio-economic characteristics of the surroundings as input. We find that the aggregate benefit value is determined by the size of the nature areas and population densities in their surroundings. There is clear evidence for substitution effects where available nature areas reduce the willingness to pay for new nature. Beyond the dependency on area, there is little evidence for making distinctions between nature types. Economic values do depend on the average income at a site, but these variations are entirely captured by purchase power corrections. Our value estimates are aligned with related literature and range between 150 and 400,000 USD/ha/year. A Python implementation of our metamodel is provided alongside this paper, which generates maps of the predicted values for any place in Europe in a spatial resolution of 100m.",

"abstractNote": "Interpretation of the waveform observed from satellite microwave radar altimeters is essential for the estimation of the thickness of snow and sea ice. Previous studies have relied on the radar equation to interpret backscattered signals from the snow-covered ice surface; however, that equation does not account for refraction at the snow surface, which changes the direction of the radar pulse. Therefore, this study derived a modified radar equation for a snow-covered sea ice surface that explicitly considers refraction. Compared with the ordinary equation, the modified equation produces different return powers and waveform shapes. Two primary mechanisms drive these differences: 1) changes in wavefront geometry, which reduce the return power by the square of the snow refractive index and 2) decreased incidence angles at the ice surface, which amplify the return power with increasing distance from nadir. The combined effect resulted in a dampened and broadened waveform, which can influence the interpretation and retracking of the waveform. Therefore, it is recommended that this modified radar equation be implemented to update the existing waveform simulators.",

"abstractNote": "To better understand the increasing human impact on the water cycle and the feedbacks between hydrology and society, the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) organized the scientific decade “Panta Rhei – Everything Flows: Change in hydrology and society” (2013–2022). A key finding is the need to use integrated approaches to assess the co-evolution of human–water systems in order to avoid unintended consequences of human interventions over long periods of time. Additionally, substantial progress has been made in leveraging new data sources on human behaviour, e.g. through text mining of social media posts. Much has been learned about detecting hydrological changes and attributing them to their drivers, e.g. quantifying climate effects on floods. To achieve further progress, we recommend broadening the understanding, the discipline and training activities, while at the same time pursuing synthesis by focusing on key themes, developing innovative approaches and finding sustainable solutions to the world’s water problems.",

"abstractNote": "Eutrophication status assessments of the Baltic Sea rely on regionally agreed monitoring and assessment methodologies based on indicators with thresholds of achieving or not achieving a good environmental status. Model outputs can be used to increase the data availability and assessment confidence. We evaluated the applicability of Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) reanalysis products for four eutrophication indicators – dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphorus (DIP), chlorophyll-a and oxygen debt. The most significant discrepancies between the model-based and monitoring-based indicator results were found for DIN. Compared to observations, significantly lower winter DIN concentrations were also reflected in modelled low summer chlorophyll-a levels. A general agreement between the modelled and observed DIP values was not the case in the northern and eastern basins with large freshwater discharges and either very low or high DIP concentrations. A poor agreement between the model and observations in these basins could be related to low data availability for the assessment and assimilation into the model. Significantly lower oxygen debt values in the deep basins derived using the reanalysis product than the observations point to model deficiencies in reproducing mixing and biogeochemical processes. More observations and biogeochemical data assimilation, which was skipped in the latest CMEMS reanalysis product, are obvious ways to improve the model outputs. However, biogeochemical models must be further developed to better match model outputs and observations before introducing more sophisticated eutrophication indicators.",

"abstractNote": "Atlantic Water plays a key role in future changes in the Arctic Ocean. It contributes to Atlantification by transporting salt and heat within the Arctic Ocean basins. Many studies also attribute the amplified warming of the Arctic Ocean to an increase in poleward ocean heat transport by warming currents or the increasing strength of ocean currents. Global models are needed to reliably predict consistent trends in heat transport, as large-scale processes are at play. However, these models are too coarse to resolve key ocean processes and to address the complex interplay between ocean dynamics and the bathymetry of the Arctic region. Here, we propose to construct a sub-ensemble of simulations based on 235 historical simulations from 12 CMIP6 models that best represent the downstream drivers of Atlantic warming. We select the model ensemble members showing the closest agreement with observed surface temperature variability over 1960–1990 in the subpolar gyre (SPG). More specifically, we use a recent index that links surface temperature in the SPG to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC): the AMOC-SST index. The subsampled ensemble shows a better correlation with the observed AMOC-SST index over the last 35 years of the historical period (1980–2014). It also displays a reduced error and better correlation for the Atlantic Water core temperature and depth in the Eurasian Arctic Ocean when compared to reanalysis and observations. Overall, the AMOC-SST index-based selection leads to a systematic improvement in the representation of the Atlantic Water layer in the Eurasian Arctic region, suggesting a clear connection between the Arctic Ocean and surface temperature in the subpolar region, and by extension, possibly the AMOC.",

"abstractNote": "Greenland Ice Sheet near-surface density is a key parameter as it facilitates converting changes in volume from repeat satellite altimetry to changes in mass. However, the need to continually quantify density through both space and time means it is conventionally derived using numerical models. Recently, new focus is being placed on directly deriving ice sheet surface properties from satellite observations. Here we show how 11 years of surface densities derived from ESA CryoSat-2 and CNES/ISRO SARAL radar altimetry compare against in situ and regional climate model results. We find that a consistent interpretation of the satellite near-surface densities is strongly modulated by the presence of melt. For periods when the ice sheet surface can be considered frozen, satellite-based densities best represent in situ conditions at different intervals in the top 1.25 m. At the same time, while long-term pan-Greenland observation- and model-based mean densities are similar, the observations reveal spatial patterns absent in the models and consistently greater densities in the ice sheet interior. In months with strong melting, the satellite results return anomalously low surface densities, though accounting for associated changes in radar backscattering phenomena and stratigraphic interpretation are limited by the lack of contemporaneous in situ data. Overall, we establish a quantitative approach for interpreting novel densities derived exclusively from satellite observations and present a comparison to state-of-the-art model results.",

"abstractNote": "Ocean mesoscale eddies are important drivers of upper ocean physical and biological processes. However, owing to their ephemeral nature and limited observational data, the impact of eddies on three-dimensional biogeochemical cycles and hence related phytoplankton phenology remains unclear. Here, from ship-based surveys, we assessed the impact of two eddies of opposite polarity on phytoplankton biomass and community structure, in the upper 200 m of the northwest South China Sea (SCS), as well as their effect on the diapycnal nutrient fluxes and oxygen concentration. These observations revealed that pico-phytoplankton dominated phytoplankton community, whereas the fraction of micro- and nano- phytoplankton (Fmicro and Fnano) increased with depth, reaching a maximum near the SCM layer (located between 50 and 100 m). The magnitude of SCM and total phytoplankton Chl were greater within the cyclonic eddy (CE) compared to those influenced by the anticyclonic eddy due to the enhanced vertical diapycnal fluxes of nutrients within the CE. The elevated diapycnal nutrient flux in the CE resulted from an increase in turbulent kinetic energy dissipation coefficient and steeper vertical gradients in inorganic nutrients. Pigment-based chemotaxonomy further indicated that eukaryotes increased significantly in the SCM layer with concentrations reaching 0.16 ± 0.08 mg m−3; the enhancement of Fmicro in the CE was mainly attributed to the increased contribution of diatoms. The vertical biogeochemical dynamics revealed by this research may showcase fundamental characteristics of oligotrophic ecosystems, where mesoscale perturbations are vertically heterogeneous, improving our understanding of the complex biophysical interactions within mesoscale eddies.",

"abstractNote": "Resilient coastal communities and sustainable marine economies require actionable knowledge to plan for and adapt to emerging and potential future climate change, particularly in relation to ecosystem services and coastal hazards. Such knowledge necessarily draws heavily on coastal ocean modelling of future climate impacts, using a great diversity of both global and regional approaches to explore multiple societal challenges in coastal and shelf seas around the world. In this paper, we explore the challenges, solutions and benefits of developing a better coordinated and global approach to future climate impacts modelling of the coastal ocean, in the context of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development project Future Coastal Ocean Climates (FLAME; part of the CoastPredict programme). Particularly, we address the need for diverse modelling approaches to meet different societal challenges, how regions can be harmonised through clustering and typology approaches, and how coordination of experimental designs can promote a better understanding of uncertainties and regional responses. Improved harmonisation of future climate impact projections in the global coastal ocean would allow sectoral and cross-sectoral global scale risk assessments, improve process understanding and help build capacity in under-represented areas such as the global south and small island developing states. We conclude with a proposed framework for a Global Coastal Ocean Model Intercomparison Project.",

"abstractNote": "Predicting the winter climate over Eurasia is challenging as both the initialized predictions and uninitialized climate projections show limited skill in reproducing observed variability on multi-annual to decadal timescales. This study presents a novel approach to constrain variability in projection simulations over Eurasia by exploiting the spatial patterns of teleconnection between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the near-surface air temperature (SAT). The constraint evaluates simulated and observed NAO-temperature teleconnection patterns during 20 year windows prior to making predictions. The resulting top ranking members are used to make predictions for the next 10 years. We find here that the constrained ensemble is skillful in predicting winter SAT on multi-annual to decadal timescales over Eurasia. We also find that the constrained multi-annual predictions yield higher correlation skill compared to both the unconstrained ensemble and the initialized predictions, especially up to 5 year mean winter SAT predictions. Therefore, we argue that for the Eurasia region, the constraint could provide skillful winter SAT predictions on multi-annual timescales with minimal cost compared to the state of the art initialized decadal climate predictions for which added value from initialization wanes quickly after the first forecast year.",

"abstractNote": "The Scanning Microwave Spectrometer (SCAMS) onboard the NIMBUS-6 satellite operated between 15 June 1975 and 1 June 1976. Its primary mission objective was to map tropospheric temperature profiles for improving weather predictions, measuring Brightness Temperature(s) (TBs) at five different frequencies (22.235, 31.65, 52.85, 53.85 and 55.45 GHz). However, the top-of-the-atmosphere emission measured at the 22.235 and the 31.65 GHz radiometer channels on the satellite are dominated by surface emission over polar open water and sea ice and can therefore be used for mapping sea ice concentration (SIC) on large scale (∼100 km). Here we present a SIC and ice type data set, which is based on the TB observations of the two lowest frequencies of SCAMS (center frequencies at 22.235 & 31.65 GHz). While the SCAMS channels do not completely align with the usual frequencies for sea ice retrievals (19, 22 and 37 GHz) in modern processing methods, it is still possible to apply modern techniques to reduce noise in the data. The SIC dataset provides important insights into the sea ice concentration, extent and type of the mid 1970s, where other satellite datasets e.g. the NIMBUS-5 ESMR have gaps and irregular coverage. The SCAMS data has been processed following modern methods, including a regional noise reduction over open water using a simple radiative transfer model, land-spillover corrections and estimation of uncertainties, as well as dynamical tie-points to calibrate the algorithm. The data set has been resampled into daily files with EUMETSAT’s OSI-SAF and ESA CCI compatible daily grids and land masks, for easier comparison with other data sets, such as the modern multi-frequency period starting with NIMBUS-7 SMMR in October 1978 to present and the 1972–1977 period covered by the NIMBUS-5 ESMR with some interruptions. The SCAMS TBs were processed with a hybrid SIC algorithm, combining a one and a two-channel algorithm over open water and ice respectively. We find that the SIC calculated by the two-channel algorithm has more noise over water and low SIC areas than the single-channel algorithm. However, the two-channel algorithm does not systematically underestimate SIC in regions covered by Multi Year Ice (MYI) as the single channel algorithm does. A classification of sea ice types for First Year Ice (FYI) and MYI in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) proved successful, while it was also possible to identify two surface types A and B for the Southern Hemisphere (SH) sea ice, with different radiometric signatures. A comparison of monthly mean sea ice extent (SIE) with the NIMBUS-5 ESMR showed good alignment in the both hemispheres, where the SCAMS SIE is larger by 386 676 km2 and 251 304 km2 on average in the NH and SH, respectively. SCAMS fills a gap in the N5ESMR record including the Arctic SIE minimum and the Antarctic maximum in 1975.",

"abstractNote": "Shifts in the position of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) may lead to amplification of climate extremes such as droughts and flooding. Its spatio-temporal variations respond to well-established oscillation processes like the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This research establishes the global and regional response of the ITCZ position to ENSO. It also explores the alignment between the ITCZ as determined from two methods: the surface tropical wind convergence, and maximum precipitation. The ERA5 reanalysis data, 1990–2020, are used in this study. Each longitude is scanned for latitude of maximum precipitation, during each El Niño/La Niña/Neutral year, within the 20°N/S latitude range to identify the ITCZ position. An overlay of surface tropical wind convergence and the ITCZ position is employed for comparison of the two methods. The study concludes that the position established by the maximum precipitation aligns with the surface tropical wind convergence over the global oceanic areas. On seasonal average, the La Niña ITCZ position is consistently southward of its El Niño position over Africa and Central Pacific Ocean. Furthermore, the extreme cases of El Niño/La Niña leads to further north/south shifting of the ITCZ position from its normal El Niño/La Niña positions. The continental and Atlantic Ocean ITCZ is more persistent and shows a minimal fluctuation, in comparison to Oceanic ITCZ, during the El Niño/La Niña. Cross-wavelet analysis was explored as an African case study and it shows common high-power features between the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) and ITCZ signals over a four-year periodicity, mirroring the ENSO periodicity albeit with slowly varying time lag across the years. The cross-correlation of the two signals is strongest in Austral summer (DJF), corresponding to the peak of ENSO. This study contributes to the understanding of the overall description of the global and regional (with Australia and South America as new additions) ITCZ along with its response to the ENSO phases using the latest ERA reanalysis data. The global/regional spatio-temporal ITCZ shifts open an opportunity for improved interpretation of seasonal forecasts of hydroclimatic events, especially under climate change conditions that reflect a possibility of an increase in the frequency of ENSO events in the future.",

"abstractNote": "The chapter underscores the importance of understanding climate attribution in Africa, focusing on methodologies and case studies. Two main approaches to climate extremes attribution, namely the forecast model-based and climate model-based approaches, are discussed. The influence of anthropogenic factors on temperature extremes and drought in some African monsoon regions is discussed. While aerosol forcings have a cooling effect, anthropogenic emissions significantly increase the likelihood of extreme heat events, as seen in North Africa. Anthropogenic emissions and variability in natural forcings, such as from El Niño and the North Atlantic Oscillation, also play substantial roles in some hydrometeorological extremes in Africa. Future projections indicate heightened risks under low mitigation scenarios, emphasizing the urgency of global efforts to curb anthropogenic emissions. Climate attribution challenges in Africa include model uncertainties, computational demands, and the limited research infrastructure. The chapter calls for policy formulation to strengthen collaboration in attribution studies and investment in climate science, which can further enhance climate extremes attribution studies in Africa.",
