The proportion of therapists reporting use of outcome measures increased from 65.7% at baseline (23/36 participants) to 91.4% at 4 months post-workshop (32/35 participants). There was a small increase in the range of outcome measures used across the sample, from 15 at baseline to 18 after 4 months. This paper begins to address this knowledge gap by reporting the results of a United Kingdom survey of the uptake of standardised hand assessments by occupational therapists in hospital-based rheumatology services.\nA purpose-designed postal questionnaire was mailed to ‘The Senior Occupational Therapist in Rheumatology’ at every hospital in the United Kingdom where a consultant rheumatologist was known to practise, seeking information on participants' knowledge about, use of and attitudes towards standardised hand assessments.\nThe overall response rate was 80% (160/200). The 118 respondents who returned completed questionnaires reported a very low uptake of standardised hand assessments, with fewer than 10% using measures of observed task performance. The reasons for preferring non-standardised instruments clustered under six themes: advantages of non-standardised measures, access, delivery of care, training, barriers and exceptions.\nThe barriers to increasing the uptake of standardised hand assessments by occupational therapists working in rheumatology need to be addressed. The focus of this paper is on the use of standardised tests. The research design was a cross-sectional descriptive survey, using a postal questionnaire as the data collection tool.\nOut of 89 questionnaires sent, 66 (74%) were returned and 48 (54%) were deemed eligible. The findings demonstrated that 34 (71%) of the 48 respondents used standardised tests. The most common tests used regularly were the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (79%) and the Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (74%). Standardised tests were used mainly to measure outcomes. The main reason that the participants did not use standardised tests or used them cautiously was the lack of suitable tests for the client.\nMost of the study's findings were consistent with those of previous studies. The limited use of occupation-centred standardised tests and the necessity of critiquing standardised tests, especially when used as outcome measures, are discussed. It is suggested that further research on whether the standardised tests contribute to or do not contribute to an occupation-centred practice would be of great value.", "publicationTitle": "The British "abstractNote": "Purpose:\nThe purposes of this study were to examine changes in the use of standardized outcome measures by practising physiotherapists in Ireland and to compare those trends to the results of a similar survey conducted previously in Canada.\n\nMethod:\nA survey methodology was employed. The review of practice occurred at two points in time. Senior clinical physiotherapists working with older people participated. Questions were asked about the use of standardized outcome measures, the nature and pattern of their use, and the level of confidence the respondents had in using such measures.\n\nResults:\nThe results chart the changes in practice over a 5-year period. Although there was an increase in the use of standardized outcome measures, the respondents acknowledged barriers to their systematic use in routine practice (e.g., lack of time, resources/administrative support). There was a lack of professional consensus on what instruments to use in general, as well as which to use for particular client groups. Concern was expressed that none of the available instruments met their clients’ needs. Where possible and appropriate, comparison was made between the data from the 2003 Irish study and a survey of Canadian physiotherapists conducted in 1998.\n\nConclusion:\nThis review of practice illustrates that changes that have occurred in Ireland in the use of standardized outcome measures are similar to those that have occurred in Canada, but barriers remain to their complete integration
