These luxury cloths called tombe toun that are worn and valued by Dogon women for their sheen embody prestige for ceremonies as well as they act as a material identity and a form of meta-language. In this article, I discuss the indigenous concept of sheen as expressed through the production and usages of wild silk wrappers. I show that from a Dogon point of view, sheen mainly refers to a living force called daoula inherent to wild silk. daoula as a kind of “aura“ of the textile embraces the medicinal and magic properties of wild silk but also its durability, strength and material brilliance. These are drawn out of the cocoons and threads by use of technical transformative processes and through wearing the wrapper, which acts as a marker of social visibility and of which daoula empowers the wearer. I suggest that the cultural significance attached to Dogon wild silk material and textiles that symbolize Dogon social values such as personal worth, wealth, and social status, rests on the particular Though highlighting and solidifying chronology, patterns of distribution, and typology, the primary aims of the collection are to present a new methodology that emphasises regional workshops, scientific data, and the wider trade culture.\n\nThis methodology embraces a shift in conceptual approach to the study of glass by explaining typological change through the existence of a thriving supra-national commercial network that responded to market demands and combines the results of a range of new scientific techniques into a framework that stresses co-dependence and similarities between the various sites considered. Such an approach, particularly within Byzantine and Early Islamic glass production, is a pioneering concept that contextualises individual sites within the wider region.\n\nBy twinning a critique of archaeometric methods with the latest archaeological research, the contributors present a foundation for glass research, seen through the lens of consumption demands and geographical necessity, that analyses production centres and traditional typological knowledge. In so doing the they bridge an important divide by demonstrating the co-habitability of diverse approaches and disciplines, linking, for example, the production of Campanulate bowls from Gallaecia with the burgeoning international late antique style. Equally, the particular details of those pieces allow us to identify a regional style as well as local production. In 1676 the English abandoned Fort Orange to build a new fort elsewhere; after 1790, the city of Albany, N.Y., expanded over the site, covering and partially destroying the archeological evidence of Fort Orange during subsequent urban development. Remains of a part of the site were uncovered and carefully recorded during a five-month rescue excavation project in 1970 and 1971 preceding new highway construction. This work produced clearly documented 17th century Dutch cultural material from before 1664 in New Netherland for study, quantitative analysis, and comparison with material excavated from other 17th century aboriginal and European sites. Research questions focus on the transplantation and adaptation of Dutch material culture to New Netherland and the extent of its influence in other cultures. The excavation provided information on the size of the fort and dimensions of features within, use of the south moat as a tavern dump, changing diet of fort occupants, methods of construction of houses, types of furnishings and diversity of material culture, continuing function of the site as a crossroads for trade since prehistoric times, and changing trade relationships between Fort Orange, other sites in North America, and sites across the Atlantic. Isolated 150 miles from New Amsterdam (New York City) and the Atlantic Ocean, far up a tidal river which froze solid in the winter, the Dutch at Fort Orange by 1664 nevertheless had established a highly Europeanized material culture comparable in its completeness to that of the fatherland in the 17th century Dutch \"Golden Age.\" When the English took New Netherland, they acquired a colony that was no mere frontier outpost but which embodied a material culture almost as fully as sophisticated as that of the villages and farms of the mid-17th century Netherlands.
