Arctic waters by reducing surface ice cover and allow increased access to commercial vessels. Ballast water discharged by incoming overseas vessels is an important means for introducing species on a global scale. Analyses of air temperatures at Churchill, Manitoba between 1943 and 2002 indicated an increase in mean temperature within the past decade. Churchill is the only major northern port in this region where grain has been exported on a limited basis due to the short navigation season. Economic analyses of grain exported from Canadian and U.S. ports indicated some cost advantages for using northern ports. The Hudson Bay region is vulnerable to increased exotic species introductions because of its southerly location. Current ballast water exchange measures to reduce the risk of introductions may not be effective because most vessels enter the region with ballast, and the ballast exchange zone is located relatively close to coastal areas where the habitat could be favorable for an introduced species to become established. The probability of a large crab species introduced to this region from northern European waters is discussed. The risk of ballast water-related exotic species introduction to this region may be reduced by expanding the types of cargo handled and developing a strong import market. This approach would accommodate an increase in the number of vessels with cargo, and substantially reduce the volume of ballast carried to this region.", "publicationTitle": "Environmental Jusqu'à maintenant, aucune preuve scientifique n'avait été apportée, dans le contexte de la navigation maritime, pour soutenir la thèse d'un trafic maritime accru. Le principe du numéral glaciel (NG) du Système des régimes de glaces pour la navigation dans l'Arctique (AIRSS) qui contrôle les activités de navigation dans les eaux arctiques canadiennes était assimilé spatialement avec la base de données historiques numériques du Service canadien des glaces (SCG) par le biais d'un système d'information géographique (SIG). Le système de numéral glaciel fournit un cadre quantifiable pour l'examen historique de l'état des glaces dans le contexte de la navigation maritime. Les résultats fournissent une évaluation spatiale et temporelle de la variabilité de la navigation maritime dans le contexte du transit par navire de 1969–2002 pour la partie ouest du PNO. Les routes possibles dans le PNO sont sujettes à une variabilité inter-annuelle extrême dans les valeurs de NG au cours des 34 dernières années. Des fluctuations annuelles dans les valeurs de NG sont potentiellement attribuables à la fréquence des épisodes de glace multi-années (GMA). La côte ouest de l'île Banks connaît depuis 1991 des valeurs plus faibles de NG, ce qui pourrait constituer une barrière potentielle à la navigation totale dans le PNO. Il a aussi été possible de démontrer que des diminutions de NG sont potentiellement associées avec le signal positif de l'indice de l'oscillation arctique (OA). The opening of viable shipping routes through the Northern passages will generate new environmental problems including the degradation of air quality in the Arctic. The release of considerable amounts of carbon monoxide, nitric oxide and other chemical substances by the ship's combustion engines will enhance the level of atmospheric photooxidants and other secondary pollutants in this region. Here we show that, during the summer months, surface ozone concentrations in the Arctic could be enhanced by a factor of 2–3 in the decades ahead as a consequence of ship operations through the northern passages.
