Loin de rechercher une illustration de l’esclavage, ces visites (dont les premières éditions ont eu lieu en 2012 et 2013) ont pour but de mettre en lumière les liens entre esthétique, arts de vivre et de consommer et les mondes de l'esclavage colonial. Le Louvre rassemble une des plus impressionnantes collections de peinture européenne entre deux dates 1793 –date de la première abolition de l’esclavage dans les colonies françaises, à Saint-Domingue- et 1848 –date de la seconde et définitive abolition de l’esclavage dans les colonies françaises. Entre ces deux dates, marquantes dans l’histoire de l’esclavage colonial, traite et esclavage rapportent à l’Europe de grandes richesses et font connaître des produits qui font bientôt partie du quotidien : sucre, tabac, café, chocolat, coton, bois précieux… Il s’agit de voir commet ces objets, produits par des esclaves, s’insinuent dans la peinture et deviennent des objets de représentation sociale, culturelle et de genre.Dans ce corpus, Le Radeau de la méduse occupe une place particulière. Réalisé entre 1818 et 1819, le tableau faisait référence au naufrage de La Méduse, frégate de la marine royale partie en 1816 pour coloniser le Sénégal. Les survivants firent le récit d’un radeau emportant 150 hommes vers une odyssée qui dura 13 jours et n’épargna que 10 vies où règlements de comptes et cannibalisme s’ajoutèrent à la détresse. Mais Le Radeau de la méduse fut aussi contemporain de la traite illégale de l’esclavage qui n’était toujours pas aboli dans les colonies françaises. En mettant en scène des hommes noirs parmi les naufragés, Géricault interrogeait des codes de représentation.Marcus Rediker, auteur de nombreux ouvrages sur l’esclavage dont Les Révoltés de l’Amistad (2015), commentera le tableau après une introduction des visites par Françoise Vergès.
