As an individual develops, s/he is increasingly able to solve abstract problems logically and to think critically of the self and others in moral, social, emotive and judgmental terms. The individual assimilates and accommodates the reformed knowledge gained into new structures of thought, affecting esteem and efficacy. The transformation achieved results in autonomy, a necessary attribute in the current climate of world-wide change. Of course, the reformed knowledge might result in negative outcomes with the individual's sense of self being lowered with resulting dependency. A way of ensuring positive outcomes is through the structured and supported use of e-portfolios in personalized and reflective mode. This approach reflects current policies in England calling for the development of e-assessment and the embedding of personal learning and thinking skills into school, further and higher education curricula. The framework comprises four components: confirming and interrupting current frames of reference, working with triggers for transformative learning, acknowledging a time of retreat or dormancy, and developing the new perspective. The two-year process eventually involved 178 leaders and more than a thousand other members of the church-learning, planning, and collaboratively developing a new educational ministry. Nine cycles of planning, action, and reflection resulted in a new educational program for children and an alternative model for adult learning. Four elements were found to facilitate the process: structure, context, mechanics, and laity engagement. Findings suggest that heuristic educational models, such as participatory action research, have potential for individual and congregational transformation. Creating knowledge in learning communities can facilitate innovative solutions to increasingly complex problems in today's knowledge society. Designing the right environment to create online communities is a complex task that has implications for designers, facilitators and participants. The aim is to create a community that welcomes and engages in constructive controversy, prompting learners to view their practice in an entirely new way. Three significant environmental factors that will enable the creation of a supportive community in which transformative learning can occur include social presence, authentic learning and interdependency. These are intricately linked and take on different levels of importance in different phases of learning and community development. Getting the balance right and being aware of when to emphasise a particular environmental factor is necessary to establish a community that can effectively engage in constructive controversy leading to personal transformation. interpersonal functioning, perceived spirituality, and selected spiritual practices. Using Bowen's family systems theory, the authors proposed that an individual's level of spiritual development and level of differentiation are correlated and that certain spiritual practices are predictive of both of these levels. The results of this study showed a positive correlation between differentiation and a general report of spirituality. Spiritual practices also predicted individuals' level of spiritual development. A common underlying concept, self-regulation, may explain the correlation between differentiation and spiritual development. Likewise, spiritual practices may support change in both areas. Spiritual dwelling was operationalized using a developmental measure of realistic acceptance (RA)(Hall & Edwards, 2002), and spiritual seeking was measured with the Quest Scale (Batson & Schoenrade, 1991a, 1991b). Results included modest positive correlations between Quest and Spiritual Instability, Spiritual Disappointment, and Mental Health Symptoms and modest negative correlations between both RA and Mental Health Symptoms. The report of a recent spiritual transformation moderated the curvilinear relationship between Quest and RA supporting the relational spirituality model. Implications are considered for future research on dialectical understandings of spiritual development and for training programs in the helping professions.
