"abstractNote": "Neoliberal capitalism’s demands for efficiency and innovation have greatly impacted North American academic libraries and the work conducted in them, including information literacy instruction. The divisive forces of neoliberalism must be met with resistance, and libraries hold the potential for generating an information literacy praxis where learners engage information with a critical consciousness instead of a consumerist one. Using library labor conditions and the contradictions between innovation and student learning as focal points, we argue that academic library workers should seek to center attention to inequities and injustices in the information economy and scholarly information systems in their instruction, identify shared issues within their workplaces to organize around, and build coalitions outside libraries to transform what is possible for academic labor and student learning alike.",

"abstractNote": "In this article we connect critical librarianship and its practices of information literacy (IL) with working-class experiences of higher education (HE). Although the research literature and professional body of knowledge of critical information literacy (CIL), is one of the most theoretically-developed areas of wider critical librarianship (Critlib) movement, working-class knowledge and experiences remain underrepresented.\nOne reason for this is that the values, behaviour and assumptions of library and HE workers are shaped by a HE system which inculcates middle-class values and cultural capitals within students, and stigmatises working-class students as lacking or in deficit. Hegemonic, or non-critical, IL proselytises middle-class values and assumptions about academic practices and skills development including the notion of an ideal student with behaviour and markers of identity which reflect those most privileged by wider society. In contrast CIL, framed as the socially-just practice of IL is theoretically well-placed to support working-class library workers in destabilising this alongside middle-class accomplices.\nEmploying Yosso’s (2005) concept of community and cultural wealth (CCW), we analyse how library workers can recognise working-class cultural wealth within the context of CIL and wider working practices. As such narrative accounts are lacking in the literature, we utilise collaborative autoethnography (CAE) (Chang et al., 2013) to consider and interpret our own experiences of libraries when we were university students ourselves, and more recently as HE workers of working-class heritage.",

"abstractNote": "This paper traces the published literature on whiteness in libraries, identifying major themes in that literature, and then highlights the importance of decentering whiteness for moving the information professions forward. Engaging a dialogic ethnographic methodology, this paper was borne of conversations between librarians of color who worked in the same predominantly white library. The salient themes from those dialogues were the many ways that adherence to whiteness in libraries has had deleterious affective and career implications for librarians of color. The authors argue that to decenter whiteness in libraries and other information centers, it is crucial to center the experiences and well-being of librarians of color; diversify the ranks of librarians through bold initiatives, significantly increasing the numbers of librarians of color; and make large-scale incisive structural change at organizational levels. The paper concludes with an invitation for all information professionals to participate in inclusiveness initiatives by moving from microaggressions to microaffections.",

"abstractNote": "Introduction. Critical information literacy (CIL) has been explored, refined, debated and critiqued since its first appearances in the literature twenty years ago. CIL uses teaching and learning settings in libraries to understand and act upon oppression in information systems. What does the literature tell us about the direction of CIL and critical librarianship more broadly, and what is absent from the existing scholarship? Method. This research explores CIL's recent past through a literature review and analysis of 97 publications from 2016-2024. The review is international in scope. Results. The literature review finds common thematic concerns in the areas of Conceptualising and theorising, Responding to contemporary politics and technologies, and Critiquing critical information literacy. Additionally, several issues and failings of CIL were identified, including a lack of attention to race and labour and the overrepresentation of perspectives based in higher education and western-centric knowledge systems. Conclusions. The author suggests that to move towards its liberatory aims, the burgeoning field of CIL should continue drawing upon other relevant movements and contemporary theories, establish localised analyses of power and be considered as a dynamic and context-dependent concept rooted in sociopolitical realities.",

"abstractNote": "Purpose The purpose of this paper is to formally assess the training program received by information studies graduate students and the reference services they provided at a research-intensive university. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative content analysis was used to evaluate if graduate students incorporated the training they received in their provision of reference services. The students’ virtual reference transcripts were coded to identify the level of questions asked, if a reference interview occurred and if different teaching methods were used by the students in their interactions. The in-person reference transactions recorded by the students were coded for the level of questions asked. Findings The main findings demonstrate a low frequency of reference interviews in chat interactions with a presence in only 23 per cent of instances while showing that instructional methods are highly used by graduate student reference assistants and are present in 66 per cent of chat conversations. Originality/value This study is of interest to academic libraries who wish to partner with information studies programs and schools to offer graduate students valuable work experience. It aims to show the value that graduate students can bring to reference services. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of continuously developing training programs and assessing the performance of graduate students working in these roles.",

"abstractNote": "The growing trends of tiered reference, roving librarians, and virtual reference offer academic libraries several options for providing the most effective reference service. Increased enrollment at community colleges has prompted a reconsideration of how librarians can balance reference, teaching, and faculty responsibilities. This article presents a case study of the Evelyn S. Field Library's implementation of a holistic reference format, blending the referral system of tiered reference with the roving librarian concept to remove full-time faculty librarians from the traditional reference desk, increase the amount of time chat reference can be offered, and create a more effective environment for in-depth reference and research assistance.",

Although his comments had little influence on subsequent editions of the Pseudodoxia, they are further evidence of how stimulating Browne?s work was to his contemporaries as well as an indication of the mental furniture of a man who shared some of Browne?s extraordinary curiosity about the natural world.",

"abstractNote": "Public intellectual and subversive media personality, feminist and anarchist Germaine Greer wrote multiple innovative texts on feminine issues in the 1960s and 70s, and particularly on women’s sexuality. Among her less researched texts were those published in counterculture magazines Oz and Suck, both characterized by original and trailblazing verbal and visual contents. In those texts, Greer presented her view of feminine sexuality as a revolutionary force in the struggle for equality, and in the process, provided women with essential, silenced knowledge about their bodies and sexualities. This article discusses Greer’s sexual pedagogy for women based on her texts published in both magazines and on the visual images attached to them. These imagetexts are analyzed within the historical context of the sexual revolution and countercultural press of the 1960-70s in Britain and within the theoretical frameworks of critical sexual literacy and critical visual literacy and analysis.",

"abstractNote": "Human Operators: A Critical Oral History of Technology in Librariesis a collective oral history covering many of the issues in technology in librarianship in the early 21st century. Via edited and compiled interview transcripts, readers get to “hear” the voices of librarians and archivists discussing tech topics from perspectives that are critical, social justice-oriented, feminist, anti-racist, and ecologically-minded.\n\nThis readable, conversational book aims to bring out specific critiques of technology as well as more inspiring aspects of what’s going on in the instructional, open source, free culture, and maker worlds in the field. The book is less about the technology per se and more about critical thinking around technology and how it actually works in people’s lives.\n\nIncludes interviews with Celeste Â-Re, Vivian G. "abstractNote": "Objectives: We examined the association between race/ethnicity and all-cause mortality risk in US adults and whether this association differs by nativity status. Methods: We used Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate all-cause mortality rates in 1997 through 2004 National Health Interview Survey respondents, relating the risk for Hispanic subgroup, non-Hispanic Black, and other non-Hispanic to non-Hispanic White adults before and after controlling for selected characteristics stratified by age and gender. Results. We observed a Hispanic mortality advantage over non-Hispanic Whites among women that depended on nativity status: US-born Mexican Americans aged 25 to 44 years had a 90% (95% confidence interval [CI]=0.03, 0.31) lower death rate; island- or foreign-born Cubans and other Hispanics aged 45 to 64 years were more than two times less likely to die than were their non- Hispanic White counterparts. Island- or foreign-born Puerto Rican and US-born Mexican American women aged 65 years and older exhibited at least a 25% lower rate of dying than did their non-Hispanics White counterparts. Conclusions: The \"Hispanic paradox\" may not be a static process and may change with this population growth and its increasing diversity over time.",
