            "abstractNote": "An attempt is made to account for differences between scientific & prescientific cultures parsimoniously & without assertion of a single great dichotomy, by analyzing the role of producing records & figures on paper. This process is seen as a means of competing with rival scientists on more favorable terms. The cognitive structure of inscriptions is analyzed, with emphasis on optical consistency, visual culture, & a new way of accumulating time & space. Inscriptions permit scientists engaged in dispute to bring together evidence from many places & to present arguments more compellingly. Working with such inscriptions, rather than with nature, is what characterizes modern scientists distinctively. Their inscriptions are mobile, immutable, flat, of modifiable scale, reproducible, recombinable, superimposible, & capable of inclusion in written texts & of merging with geometry. This capacity to mobilize information is crucial to the nature of power in modern societies, especially in its bureaucratic forms. 100 References. W. H.
