The social, political and institutional determinants that allow access to health are considered crucial to achieve a sustainable society. Also, a measurement of health indicators in Mexico and Nuevo Leon state is presented. These indicators have been considered by international strategies such as the Human Development Index (IDH), Agenda 21 and the Millennium Development Goals (ODM). Additionally, the analysis uses the Gini coefficient applied to health indicators in order to determine population equity advances and development of health opportunities. (English)",

"abstractNote": "In Mexico, as in the rest of the Latin American countries, it has been recognized that despite some advances in this field, traditional planning in general and territorial and ecological planning programmes in particular, the latter as instruments of environmental management linked to land use, the efforts have mainly been of indicative character lacking of political backup for an effective implementation. The purpose of this essay is to carry out an analytical reflection on the driving forces and megatrends affecting these territorial planning processes. For that, Mexico's two major territorial planning programmes are considered as a reference point: the Ecological and the Territorial Planning Programmes. It is argued that given their strong sectorial orientation - environmental the former and urban settlements the latter-, by themselves these planning instruments cannot become substitutes of a comprehensive and sustainable regional-territorial development policy. "abstractNote": "Citizen participation is often presented as a necessary part of the process of defining and managing environmental policies. In fact, it is generally regulated in a variety of ways that affect people's rights to enquire, request and receive information. This article examines three aspects of this issue within the context of Spain: the legal and political limits of citizen participation rights, showing their inferior position in relation to conventional political participation; specific examples of citizen involvement in environmental conflicts, which operates by means that are often outside the regulated channels; and the social functions of requests for regulated participation, which indicate a remarkably contradictory situation. In actual fact, this participation takes very different forms, sometimes going through the channels defined by governments, though often consciously ignoring or questioning them. To ensure a sufficiently comprehensive analytical approach, it should include a sociological view of the conflict. (English)",

"abstractNote": "The abandonment of indigenous and traditional ways of relating to the landscape and making use of the environment are historically tied, since the epoch of conquest, to the imposition of development models that respond to foreign demands. Social scientists have variously integrated the concept of development as an analytical tool, with differing foci and applications, despite a broader and persistent tendency to relate the idea chiefly to economic growth and eschew social progress. This paper critically addresses the theoretical implications of an ecological approach to the recovery of indigenous technologies in the Andean area, on the basis of experiences in bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. Its objective is to learn from past mistakes and recast the recovery of indigenous technologies as an effective strategy to articulate viable alternatives for local communities in the fields of agriculture, herding and agroforestry. "abstractNote": "The objective of this work was to describe the concept of the civilization and environmental education model transmitted in schools of the Municipality of Puebla. Several research methodologies were applied from the theoretical perspective of social representations. Overall, teachers and students evidence a general concern for the environment, without knowing what to do. This concern is grounded in very little information; thus, teachers and children have constructed a \"thematic language\" about concepts such as pollution and deforestation, allowing them to treat this issue superficially without questioning the way in which we see, transform and establish ourselves on the planet. Three extensive socially constructed development models coexist, which imply different degrees of moral judgment development. The Weak Sustainable Development model predominates, which implies the development of conventional moral judgment and an anti-modernist position (the problems of modernity are recognized, but solutions are proposed from within it). A pedagogical model is proposed that considers the complexity of social relationships in the educational system, as well as the internal psychological processes of the students, in order to allow a continuous dialog among the diverse actors participating in the process. This intervention was based on two premises: 1) institutional attendance and the participation of the local population in the proper management of natural resources, and 2) the development of alternative means to increase production and improve the quality of life but sustaining the basin's functioning as an ecosystemic unity. The following paper presents parts of the results compiled in the authors' PhD theses worked out from February 2004 to January 2007, where they analyze the experience of Lagunillas in order to document the sustainable rural development practices therein implemented, particularly those aspects which have to do with the participatory processes of the local inhabitants, the lessons learned, and the pending challenges. "abstractNote": "Social capital can be defined as the capacity of individuals or groups to obtain benefits by participating in social networks (Robinson, Siles and Schmid and, Flores and Rello in Atria and Siles eds. 2003). In this paper, we use data from the second round of the Panel of Low Income Households in the Delegación Álvaro Obregón, México, D.F. (PAO) to fit regression models with instrumental variables in order to identify significant proxy variables related to the social capital in social networks to explain the percentage of income that households in PAO spend in food. Also, we present the results of a factor analysis to identify the variables in PAO that are related with the dimensions of trust, social networks and accepted norms that are main elements of the definition of social capital. Since 2006, the research team of the Ethnoecology Laboratory (Autonomous University of Barcelona) is conducting research projects focused on the study of social, cultural, political, and ecological factors and dynamics influencing the relation of rural and indigenous communities in Africa, Asia, Latin-America, and Europe, with their environment. Contrary to the common practice of simply extracting information from rural communities, projects at the Ethnoecology Laboratory blend academic research and actions oriented to return findings to the populations where we work and to improve their well-being and sustainable use of natural resources. The study explores the two areas as examples of the issues of both ecological and environmental frontiers relating to rural lands that are located in large metropolitan areas. The political, economic and social aspects regarding the sustainable development of the two areas are discussed.",
