Para ilustrar las posibilidades y los resultados de un ejercicio de práctica reflexiva recíproca, se presenta el Proyecto de Rehabilitación del Centro Histórico de Barranquilla, Colombia, en donde los análisis ambientales y métodos de evaluación aplicados durante el proceso de diseño, permitieron el desarrollo de una propuesta con una imagen urbana unificada y ajustada a la realidad climática, social y humana de la ciudad, resaltando sus valores históricos, culturales y ecológicos. The author explores the logical way this basis is expressed with ample reference to studies of imagined cities, to the point of proposing a three-part model that sustains the urban ways of living from the perspective of the imaginary conditions of the inhabitants. A citizen-led urbanism emerges from this approach, expressing the urban imaginings while arguing that these can either provide a purely imagined reference, thus leading to the appearance of the urban ghost, or they can offer a realistic reference, where abandonment or indifference dominate social perception. This, in turn, allows the author to highlight certain properties of space use that come to justify the central thesis: urban imaginaries are part of public space. Su objetivo es dilucidar los soportes conceptuales que subyacen en las prácticas arquitectónicas recientes. La hipótesis plantea, que el contexto post-dictadura proclive a recuperar un pasado fracturado, y las expectativas a futuro abiertas por la crisis de paradigmas, producen el par conceptual memoria / innovación, que tiñe la cultura y la arquitectura. Simultáneamente, continúa una arquitectura local con conceptos de larga duración, indiferente a la polaridad. Estas tres actitudes, son rastreadas en intervenciones en espacios públicos como representaciones de cultura y su historicidad. El análisis verifica prácticas afines a las prefiguradas, observándose distintas relaciones entre arquitectura y espacio público, entendidas como interacciones figura / fondo. Participaron 740 personas, habitantes de Yopal, Villavicencio, Valledupar, Popayán, Pereira, Pasto, Neiva, Montería, Medellín, Fusagasugá, Cúcuta, Cartagena, Cali y Bogotá. La evaluación de las condiciones que contribuyen o no a la habitabilidad del espacio público se llevó a cabo mediante un instrumento, compuesto por 48 ítems, que indagó por el grado de contribución que pueden ejercer distintas condiciones sobre la calidad del espacio público, a partir de una escala de cinco puntos que va desde no contribuye en nada (-2) a contribuye significativamente (+2). Los resultados obtenidos muestran las condiciones que más inciden en la habitabilidad del espacio público en Colombia y las que menos, lo mismo que las diferencias entre ciudades de acuerdo con la valoración que realizaron los participantes acerca del estado general del espacio público en sus ciudades. El análisis multidimensional (SSA) evidencia una estructura que refleja la función que cumple el espacio público en la valoración que hacen de este los habitantes de las ciudades colombianas.
