"abstractNote": "\"You want more scepticism at the very foundation of your work. Scepticism, the tonic of minds, the tonic of life, the agent of truth - the way of art and salvation.\" Joseph Conrad wrote these words to John Galsworthy in 1901, and this study argues that Conrad's skepticism forms the basis of his most important works, participating in a tradition of philosophical skepticism that extends from Descartes to the present. Conrad's epistemological and moral skepticism - expressed, forestalled, mitigated, and suppressed - provides the terms for the author's rethinking of the peculiar relation between philosophy and literary form in Conrad's writing and, more broadly, for reconsidering what it means to call any novel 'philosophical'. Among the issues freshly argued are Conrad's thematics of coercion, isolation, and betrayal; the complicated relations among author, narrator, and character; and the logic of Conradian romance, comedy, and tragedy. The author also offers a new way of conceptualizing the shape of Conrad's career, especially the 'decline' evidenced in the later fiction. The uniqueness of Conrad's multifarious literary and cultural inheritance makes it difficult to locate him securely in the dominant tradition of the British novel. A philosophical approach to Conrad, however, reveals links to other novelists - notably Hardy, Forster, and Woolf - all of whom share in the increasing philosophical burden of the modern novel by enacting the very philosophical issues that are discussed within their pages. Conrad's interest as a skeptic is heightened by the degree to which he resists the insights proffered by his own skepticism. The first chapter introduces the idea of the Conradian 'shelter', and the next two use Schopenhauer to show how the language of metaphysical speculation in Tales of Unrest and 'Heart of Darkness' spills over into a religious impulse that resists the disintegrating effect of Conrad's skepticism. The author then turns to Hume to model the authorial skepticism that in Lord Jim contests the continuing visionary strain of the earlier fiction and Descartes to analyze the ways in which Romantic vision is more stringently chastened by irony in Nostromo and The Secret Agent. The concluding chapter touches on several late novels before examining how competing models of political agency in Conrad's last great fiction of skepticism, Under Western Eyes, situate it somewhere between ideology critique and a mystified account of the exigencies of individual consciousness.",

"abstractNote": "In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content: Nothing happens while you live. The scenery changes, people come in and go out, that’s all. There are no beginnings. Days are tacked on to days without rhyme or reason, an interminable, monotonous addition. From time to time you make a semi-total: you say: I’ve been travelling for three years, I’ve been in Bouville for three years. Neither is there any end: you never leave a woman, a friend, a city in one go. And then everything looks alike: Shanghai, Moscow, Algiers, everything is the same after two weeks. There are moments—rarely—when you make a landmark, you realize that you’re going with a woman, in some messy business. The time of a flash. After that, the procession starts again, you begin to add up hours and days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. April, May, June. 1924, 1925, 1926. —Jean-Paul Sartre, Nausea1 A couple of years before the appearance of Ulysses, James Joyce and Djuna Barnes talked about the stuff that works of literature are made of. A seventy-year-old Russian baroness had given Joyce a trunk full of pornographic plates and a pile of obscene letters, hoping that he would make use of the material collected throughout many years of a roving life. Joyce accepted the gift and listened attentively to her anecdotes. But did he take interest in the trunk? “I did not write her story,” Joyce told Barnes. “A writer should never write about the extraordinary, that is for the journalist.”2 Joyce, we know, was the connoisseur of the ordinary. He once said that a human being never reveals as much about her character as when she ties her shoes. In 1922, he went on to publish his monument to the art of shoelacing. A towering record of the quotidian, Ulysses stubbornly seeks to capture life at its most ordinary, habitual, ritualistic, tedious, banal, common, compelling. And it does so minute by minute, hour by hour, until an entire day in the life of the three Dubliners has passed. A lot is going on in Ulysses, but nothing much happens: it’s a record of breakfasts had, walks taken, soaps purchased, newspapers read, things said, things thought, songs sung, classes taught, visits paid, ads seen, bottles drunk, sandwiches devoured, lovers received, bars frequented, coins moved, beds enjoyed. And, yes, a funeral takes place, with Leopold Bloom dutifully attending. Save for that, it’s a day like any other. Why did Joyce think it best to leave the business of the extraordinary to the press? That Joyce’s writings beautifully embody this impulse we know, just as we know that a vast number of other modernist writers similarly pursued the ordinary. Gertrude Stein, for one, emphasized that history concerns itself with “what happens from time to time,” whereas narrative concerns itself with “what is happening all the time.”3 That which happens all the time? We don’t have to move very far back in the history of literature in order to realize how utterly strange such a position is. After centuries of literary treatments of extraordinary events, life-affecting changes of fortune, or singular courses of action (say, Werther’s suicide), serious narrative fiction sets its mind on the ordinary, producing stories where a lot may be going on but very little happens. To Aristotle, the sheer thought would have been inconceivable. That which happens all the time? Such is not the stuff that epic is made of, much less tragedy. The idea would have been equally foreign to Virgil, Dante, Rabelais, Madame de Lafayette, and Schiller, even to nineteenth-century writers such as Stendhal, Balzac, the Brontës, and Eliot. Flaubert envisioned a novel about nothing, it’s true, but Madame Bovary most certainly would have pleased Aristotle in its attention to those emblematic strikes of fortune, sometimes good, sometimes bad: marriage, childbearing, adultery, treachery, suicide. For hundreds of years, even thousands, serious narrative fiction dealt with the extraordinary. Why is it that the modernist novel decides to stick with the unexceptional? It’s early in the morning on June 16, 1904, and Joyce is about to introduce his everyday hero into that “little story of a day...",

"abstractNote": "This book focuses on the relations between the translation and appropriation of classical Chinese poetry by Ezra Pound and some of his contemporaries and the development of Anglo-American Imagist poetry and poetics. It is concerned as much with critical aspects of this correlative relationship as with the question of historical influence and ascription. The author places the early work of Ezra Pound in the context of works of Chinese translation by other contemporary poet-translators such as Arthur Waley and Amy Lowell, and examines the whole notion of an \"ideogrammic\" poetry as advocated by Ernest Fenollosa and Ezra Pound against an appropriately reconstructed historical and critical context of poetic theory and practice. Closely linked to this is a discussion of Pound's use of personae and modulation of the elegiac in relation to the immediately preceding context of late Victorian elegiac lyricism and Brownigesque dramatic monologue. Through a series of close readings of translations from the Chinese, especially those by Pound, the author shows how the critical problem of what is involved in translating a Chinese poem into a new English poem is closely linked to the particulars of early Modernist literary history. In particular, through tracing the trajectory of a number of central issues and notions, such as absolute, free-floating, metaphor, metaphor as epiphanic image and its relation to syntax, metaphor and parallelism, experiments with rhythm and cadence, the book explores some of the reasons for Fenollosa's and Pound's emphasis on the visual image, the notion of \"phanopoeia\" and ideogrammic \"verbal action\" as the active perceiving of relations, and closely examines the genesis and significance of Pound's \"ideogrammic\" method, as well as the question of cultural misreading and vicarious envisagement, and provides a critical overview of Pound's general engagement with translation.",

[...] the telegrapher, when she first spies Lady Bradeen, apprehends in her mien not merely beauty, but an entire legacy-\"her birth, her father and mother, her cousins and all her ancestors\" (180). [...] the telegrapher's visions of a transcendent link to the aristocracy give way to the gravity of real-world circumstances, and she agrees to a marriage that will preserve what remains to her of her (sexual and economic) dignity.",

"abstractNote": "The introduction of Sholes & Glidden Type-Writer, the first commercially successful instrument for mechanical inscription, played a significant role in adapting alphabetic communications to the exigencies of capitalism as it came to increasingly depend on the transcription and management of printed matter. At a time when government agencies and businesses were seeking greater efficiencies in their clerical workforce, the imagined fit between typing and other kinds of feminine work (needle point and performing on a pianoforte), helped draw large numbers of women into the white-collar workforce. The article concludes by examining how the “irruption of the mechanical” into the act of self expression occasioned by the spread of typewriting was taken up as a theme in the literature of the late-nineteenth century, with particular attention to Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897).",
