"abstractNote": "Argues that although a number of closed-loop postulations to explain motor skills learning and performance phenomena have appeared recently, each of these views suffers from either (a) logical problems in explaining the phenomena or (b) predictions that are not supported by the empirical evidence. After these difficulties are discussed, a new theory for discrete motor learning is proposed that is considered to be capable of explaining the existing findings. The theory is based on the notion of the schema and uses a recall memory to produce movement and a recognition memory to evaluate response correctness. Some of the predictions are mentioned, research techniques and paradigms that can be used to test the predictions are listed, and data in support of the theory are presented. "abstractNote": "Motor learning encompasses a wide range of phenomena, ranging from relatively low-level mechanisms for maintaining calibration of our movements, to making high-level cognitive decisions about how to act in a novel situation. We survey the major existing approaches to characterizing motor learning at both the behavioral and neural level. In particular, we critically review two long-standing paradigms used in motor learning research-adaptation and sequence learning. We discuss the extent to which these paradigms can be considered models of motor skill acquisition, defined as the incremental improvement in our ability to rapidly select and then precisely execute appropriate actions, and conclude that they fall short of doing so. We then discuss two classes of emerging research paradigms-learning of arbitrary visuomotor mappings de novo and learning to execute movements with improved acuity-that more effectively address the acquisition of motor skill. Future work will be needed to determine the degree to which laboratory-based studies of skill, as described in this review, will relate to true expertise, which is likely dependent on the effects of practice on multiple cognitive processes that go beyond traditional sensorimotor neural architecture. © 2019 American Physiological Society. However, when considering the range and complexity of the processes that are involved in motor learning, even the mere mortals among us exhibit abilities that are impressive. We exercise these abilities when taking up new activities - whether it is snowboarding or ballroom dancing - but also engage in substantial motor learning on a daily basis as we adapt to changes in our environment, manipulate new objects and refine existing skills. Here we review recent research in human motor learning with an emphasis on the computational mechanisms that are involved.",

"abstractNote": "This book was written particularly as a textbook for university or college undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in human performance or motor learning, primarily in fields such as kinesiology or psychology. However, students in other fields, such as the neurosciences, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, biomedical or industrial engineering, human factors or ergonomics, and sport, will also find many of the concepts contained here to be of interest, as movement behavior is a part of all of them. And for those who are, or who are becoming, practitioners in these fields, the principles of motor behavior outlined here should provide a solid basis for tasks such as designing human-machine systems, developing training programs in sport or industry, or teaching progressions in dance or music. The emphasis of the text is behavioral. That is, the primary focus is on movement behavior that can be observed directly, as well as on the many factors that affect the quality of these performances and the ease with which they can be learned. In this sense, the book has strong ties to the methods and traditions of experimental psychology. Yet, at the same time, we focus on the neurological and biomechanical processes out of which these complex movement behaviors are crafted. Brain mechanisms that allow the detection of errors, spinal cord processes that are capable of generating patterns of skilled activities in locomotion, and various biomechanical factors that act to determine the nature of our movement behaviors are all important if we are to understand highly skilled performance. This blending of behavioral, neurophysiological, and biomechanical analyses reflects the fact that the fields of motor behavior and motor learning, movement neurophysiology (or motor control), and biomechanics are rapidly moving together toward the shared understanding of complex movement behaviors. "abstractNote": "There is considerable agreement about the importance of self-regulation to human survival. There is disagreement about how it can be analyzed and defined in a scientifically useful way. A social cognitive perspective differs markedly from theoretical traditions that seek to define self-regulation as a singular internal state, trait, or stage that is genetically endowed or personally discovered. Instead, it is defined in terms of context-specific processes that are used cyclically to achieve personal goals. These processes entail more than metacognitive knowledge and skill; they also include affective and behavioral processes, and a resilient sense of self-efficacy to control them. The cyclical interdependence of these processes, reactions, and beliefs is described in terms of three sequential phases: forethought, performance or volitional control, and self-reflection. An important feature of this cyclical model is that it can explain dysfunctions in self-regulation, as well as exemplary achievements. Dysfunctions occur because of the unfortunate reliance on reactive methods of self-regulation instead of proactive methods, which can profoundly change the course of cyclical learning and performance. An essential issue confronting all theories of self-regulation is how this capability or capacity can be developed or optimized. Social cognitive views place particular emphasis on the role of socializing agents in the development of self-regulation, such as parents, teachers, coaches, and peers. At an early age, children become aware of the value of social modeling experiences, and they rely heavily on them when acquiring needed skills.",

"abstractNote": "Self-regulated learning (SRL) includes the cognitive, metacognitive, behavioral, motivational, and emotional/affective aspects of learning. It is, therefore, an extraordinary umbrella under which a considerable number of variables that influence learning (e.g., self-efficacy, volition, cognitive strategies) are studied within a comprehensive and holistic approach. For that reason, SRL has become one of the most important areas of research within educational psychology. In this paper, six models of SRL are analyzed and compared; that is, Zimmerman; Boekaerts; Winne and Hadwin; Pintrich; Efklides; and Hadwin, Järvelä and Miller. First, each model is explored in detail in the following aspects: (a) history and development, (b) description of the model (including the model figures), (c) empirical support, and (d) instruments constructed based on the model. Then, the models are compared in a number of aspects: (a) citations, (b) phases and subprocesses, (c) how they conceptualize (meta)cognition, motivation and emotion, (d) top–down/bottom–up, (e) automaticity, and (f) context. In the discussion, the empirical evidence from the existing SRL meta-analyses is examined and implications for education are extracted. Further, four future lines of research are proposed. The review reaches two main conclusions. First, the SRL models form an integrative and coherent framework from which to conduct research and on which students can be taught to be more strategic and successful. Second, based on the available meta-analytic evidence, there are differential effects of SRL models in light of differences in students’ developmental stages or educational levels. Thus, scholars and teachers need to start applying these differential effects of the SRL models and theories to enhance students’ learning and SRL skills.",

Ss completed questionnaires concerning practice attitudes following each session, with some Ss also completing a self-evaluation. Additional collected data included adjudicators' ratings of Ss' performances. Results show that Ss who listened to a model with self-evaluation improved more than did control Ss in the areas of tone, melodic accuracy, rhythmic accuracy, interpretation, and overall performance; however, they did not improve in the areas of intonation, technique/articulation, or tempo. When self-evaluation was not undertaken, modeling Ss exhibited no significant differences in any performance area. Ss who listened to a model but did not undertake self-evaluation improved their performance compared to controls in the areas of tone, technique/articulation, rhythmic accuracy, tempo, interpretation, and overall performance but not intonation or melodic accuracy. Practice attitudes exerted no effects on performance quality. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved)",

"abstractNote": "Examined the effects of modeling, self-evaluation, and self-listening on junior high school instrumentalists' music performance ability and attitudes about practice. 82 7th-9th grade woodwind, brass, and percussion players listened to either studio recordings of a performance etude, their own performances, or both. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)",

"abstractNote": "This article reports on a research project that focused on areas of study and teaching strategies in instrumental teaching within the context of a music department in an institution of higher education. The impetus for the research project was the Music Advisors' National Association publication Instrumental Teaching and Learning in Context (MANA, 1995), which proposed a framework for instrumental teaching drawing on two models--one for 'areas of study' and the other for 'teaching styles'. The methodology was ethnographic in approach in the form of a case study involving nine instrumental teachers from the music department. Teachers and their students completed initial questionnaires that surveyed their backgrounds and perceptions of the areas of study and teaching strategies employed within their lessons. These were followed up with interviews and video recordings of lessons. The analysis highlighted the predominance of 'technique' and 'command-style' teaching strategies, suggesting an approach that is commonly described as the 'master-apprentice' model (Jorgensen, 2000). There were notable exceptions that provided some interesting insights. Relationships between areas of study and teaching strategies were also found, which merit further investigation.",
