It is based on detecting the reflections of the waves emitted by a probe. The waves may have various frequencies. Generally, the higher the frequency is, the better and more detailed output images we can get. However, if we want to obtain the brain-stem ultrasound images suitable for the Parkinson disease diagnostics, we can only use the low-frequency probes due to the presence of skull. For this reason, the output images will necessarily be of low quality. In spite of that, these images are essential for the Parkinson disease diagnostics and treatment because, except outer symptoms, they provide the only way how to determine the existence and seriousness of the disease. The low image quality may even lead to the different or inaccurate diagnosis of same image from different medical doctors. Half were then given false feedback indicating poor performance; the others experienced a non-evaluative display at that point. All were then asked to repeat the vigil. Half the observers were assessed as high optimists and half as high pessimists. The pessimists showed a steeper vigilance decrement than the optimists, consistent with a model (Scheier and Carver, 1987) that proposes that pessimists are more emotion-focused under stress than optimists, and hence would be less attentive to the vigilance display, regardless of feedback condition. This technique is based in principle on plethysmography, an older non-ultrasound technology for measuring expansion of a whole limb or body part due to perfusion. TPI adapts tissue Doppler signal processing methods to measure the “plethysmographic” signal from hundreds or thousands of sample volumes in an ultrasound image plane. This paper presents a feasibility study to determine if TPI can be used to assess cerebral vasoreactivity. Ultrasound data were collected transcranially through the temporal acoustic window from four subjects before, during, and after voluntary hyperventilation.
