The air sampling system utilizes a sampler head having a manifold block which allows for the collection of air for studying both the particulate and vapor phases of environmental tobacco smoke aerosol using only a single pump. An air flow calibrating system is utilized to measure and calibrate the air flowing through the two collection devices used in connection with the manifold block in which the air flow through the two sampling assemblies is simultaneously read out.",

"abstractNote": "The aim of this work was to study the dispersion of particulate wastes derived from marine fish farming and correlate the data with the impact on the seabed. Carbon and nutrients were correlated with the physico-chemical parameters of the sediment and the benthic community structure. The sedimentation rates in the benthic system were 1.09, 0.09 and 0.13 g m−2 day−1 for particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON) and total phosphorus (TP), respectively. TP was a reliable parameter for establishing the spatial extent of the fish farm particulate wastes. Fish farming was seen to influence not only physico-chemical and biological parameters but also the functioning of the ecosystem from a trophic point of view, particularly affecting the grazers and the balance among the trophic groups. POC, PON and TP sedimentation dynamics reflected the physico-chemical status of the sediment along the distance gradient studied, while their impact on the benthic community extended further. Therefore, the level of fish farm impact on the benthic community might be underestimated if it is assessed by merely taking into account data obtained from waste dispersion rates. The benthic habitat beneath the fish farm, Maërl bed, was seen to be very sensitive to aquaculture impact compared with other unvegetated benthic habitats, with an estimated POC-carrying capacity to maintain current diversity of 0.087 g C m−2 day−1 (only 36% greater than the basal POC input). Environmental protection agencies should define different aquaculture waste load thresholds for different benthic communities affected by finfish farming, according to their particular degree of sensitivity, in order to maintain natural ecosystem functions.",

"abstractNote": "Monitoring campaigns were made during summer 2006 in urban and forest areas of Northern Algeria. Airborne particulates were collected daily by using medium-volume aspirating systems equipped with PM10 inertial impactors. The organic fraction was extracted with soxhlet, fractioned and cleaned-up through chromatography column on alumina, then processed by gas chromatography combined with flame ionization and mass spectrometry detectors. Chemical analyses allowed to characterize a set of groups of compounds, namely n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, dicarboxylic acids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs), and highly-polar chemicals including caffeine, nicotine and oxygenated-PAHs. Besides that, the potential sources of pollution were investigated by analyzing the n-alkane carbon preference index (CPI) and selected diagnostic ratios among PAH and NPAH concentrations. Total concentrations of n-alkanes varied from 48 to 100 ng m−3 over the entire period, those of PAHs from 1.9 to 3.5 ng m−3. Despite their recognized semi-volatile properties both caffeine and nicotine, identified respectively as tracers of recreational drink and tobacco smoke, reached high concentrations in the air along all period investigated. In particular, they accounted together for ∼12% of all identified PM components in the Rouiba urban area.",

"abstractNote": "Two monitoring campaigns were conducted in northern Algeria to assess the contamination level of pesticides and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in ambient air. Six pesticides (α- and γ-hexachlorocyclohexane, fenitrothion, malathion, chlorpyrifos and λ-cyhalothrin) were monitored at two different sampling locations during the first campaign. The passive sampling was performed at a semi urban/industrial site but also in a rural area between July to September 2008. The pesticides levels, analyzed by GC/MS/MS, ranged from 16 pg m−3 to 11 ng m−3. The second campaign was carried out from May to November 2009. The polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) concentrations were evaluated at an urban/industrial and at an industrial site. The PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs, analyzed by HRGC/HRMS, ranged from 249 to 923 fg TEQ m−3. In addition to passive sampling, active sampling using an isokinetic sampler was also performed at an industrial waste incinerator. The PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs found was 268 pg TEQ m−3. This paper presents the first measurements of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs and pesticides in rural, urban and industrial areas of northern Algeria.",
