Forty-six first-year students and 31 teaching and support staff from three Australian universities took part in interviews and focus groups. This paper examines how students and staff reported on their use of new technologies in their daily lives, their stated reasons for using those technologies, and their beliefs about the benefits and limitations of using technologies as teaching and learning tools. The findings question assumptions that have been made about a “digital divide” between “digital native” students and their “digital immigrant” teachers in higher education today, suggesting we need to develop a more sophisticated understanding about the role technologies play in the lives of both students and staff. Difference between computer and human 'literacy"

– “We are not here concerned with so called computer “languages” which resemble human languages….in some ways but are forever totally unlike human languages in that they do not grow out of the unconscious but directly out of consciousness. Computer language rules (‘grammar’) are stated first and thereafter used. The ‘rules’ of grammar in natural human languages are used first and can be extracted from usage and stated explicitly in words only with difficulty and never completely. (P 7 Orality and literacy )

To compare the metaphors, the paper first develops a model of pedagogy derived from Activity Theory. It explores the implications of these metaphors in practical situations by examining a set of 60 digitally-based activities, collected as part of a snapshot survey of a representative sample of maintained schools in England, to draw out their pedagogical characteristics. In conclusion the paper discusses the issues raised by the analysis for the relationship between use of digital technologies and learners’ attainments, and the efficacy of the model that has been (EBL) to lead the teaching of humanities in Australian universities. Are there internal constraints on its happy unfolding for a future of the humanities, true to its intellectual and political projects? In its favour, the proponents of EBL cite an Enlightenment ideal of 'enquiry' that puts the highest value on creative, open ended and self-determined thought - a pursuit of knowledge that is not limited by the interests of any professional or economic class. These same proponents of EBL, however, are often in university positions assigned the task of bringing a more instrumentalist approach to the pursuit of knowledge. Is it all just a case of Orwellian doublespeak? Probyn (2005) writes about shame as a powerful and productive state that enables us to reappraise our actions and our values.
