We present a fossil deep-sea assemblage of echinoderms, gastropods, brachiopods and ostracods, from the Early Jurassic of the Glasenbach Gorge, Austria, which includes the oldest known representatives of a number of extant deep-sea groups, and thus implies that in situ diversification, in contrast to immigration from shelf habitats, played a much greater role in shaping modern deep-sea biodiversity than previously thought. A comparison with coeval shelf assemblages reveals that, at least in some of the analysed groups, significantly more extant families/superfamilies have endured in the deep sea since the Early Jurassic than in the shelf seas, which suggests that deep-sea biota are more resilient against extinction than shallow-water ones. Oppida vermehrt in Richtung mittellatènezeitlicher Großsiedlungen verlagert. Eine wesentliche Rolle bei dieser Entwicklung spielen seit 1995 die hervorragenden Ergebnisse systematischer Prospektionen und interdisziplinärer Studien im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojektes über die weitgehend ungestört erhaltene keltische Zentralsiedlung in Roseldorf. Auf der Basis hervorragender Befunde und zahlreicher auch außergewöhnlicher Funde konnten wesentliche neue Erkenntnisse über Klima und Umwelt, über Struktur und Organisation der Siedlung mit strategisch verkehrsgünstiger Lage, über die tägliche Versorgung der Bevölkerung aufgrund eines gut funktionierenden Agrarhinterlandes, über Wirtschafts- und Kulturkontakte mit eigener Münzprägung, aber vor allem über das religiöse und kultische Leben der Siedlung gewonnen werden. Drei Kultbezirke mit mindestens sieben Heiligtümern machten die Siedlung zum religiösen Zentrum weit über die Region hinaus. Ihre Entdeckung war aber nicht nur aufgrund ihrer großen Anzahl und guter Erhaltung einmalig in Europa, sondern mit ihrer Auffindung gelang es erstmalig die Existenz mittellatènezeitlicher quadratischer Kultstätten auch im Bereich des östlichen Mitteleuropa eindeutig nachzuweisen. Bei der Siedlung in Roseldorf handelt es sich demzufolge um ein Siedlungszentrum höheren Ranges, ein „Zentrum vom Typus Němčice/Roseldorf“ (V.
