The purpose of this study was to investigate LBP prevalence and the relationship between LBP and physical activity (PA) levels in a national sample of persons with traumatic transfemoral amputation (TFA). Questionnaires were mailed to a random sample of people with traumatic TFA (n = 322) from the New Zealand Artificial Limb Board national database. Of the participants who completed the survey (55% response rate), 64.1% reported LBP and 39.1% reported restricted PA due to LBP. There was no relationship between the PA levels of persons with and without LBP (chi-square = 2.11, p > 0.05). There was an equal distribution of persons with LBP in low, medium, and high PA subgroups. However, persons who reported restricted PA due to LBP had lower PA scores than persons with LBP and no restricted PA (chi-square = 11.56, p < 0.05). Based on our results, LBP is prevalent in the traumatic TFA population. PA levels are not influenced by the presence or absence of LBP. Therefore, in a TFA population, we investigated the prevalence of LBP and its relationship with years since amputation, as well as the level of daily physical activity and other prosthesis-related parameters. Method : Questionnaires were sent to 490 subjects with TFA. Of these, 240 questionnaires could be used for analysis. Results : Trauma and tumours were the most frequent reasons for amputation. The majority of the study group was aged under 30 years at the time of surgery, had been using a prosthesis more than 10 years, and had a moderately active life. Serious LBP (i.e. frequent or permanent LBP) was reported in 26.3% of the participants. No relationship was found between LBP and years since amputation or physical activity. Conclusion : The data show that the prevalence of LBP in our study group is higher than in the general population, and higher in the female than in the male participants. The initial assumption that there is a higher and increasing length of time since amputation and physical activity level is not confirmed in this study. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe that comprehensiveness. Red flags are warning signs that suggest that physician referral may be warranted. Clinic charts for 160 patients with low back pain seen at 6 outpatient physical therapy clinics were retrospectively reviewed, noting the presence or absence of 11 red flag items. Seven of the 11 red flag items were documented over 98% of the time. Most charts (96.3%) had at least 64% of the red flag items documented. Documentation of red flags was comprehensive in some areas but lacking in others. Red flags that were regularly documented included age over 50, bladder dysfunction, history of cancer, immune suppression, night pain, history of trauma, saddle anesthesia, and lower extremity neurological deficit. The red flags not regularly documented included weight loss, recent infection, and fever/chills. Factors influencing item documentation comprehensiveness are discussed, and suggestions are provided to enhance the completeness of recording patient examination data. Particular attention was given to cognitive models of emotion which postulate a key role for self-consciousness and appearance-related beliefs. Method . A cross-sectional survey of 67 adult lower limb prosthesis users who had experienced amputation within the last five years. Outcome measures were the Psychosocial Adjustment Scale of the Trinity Amputation and Prosthesis Experience Scales, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Self Consciousness Scale and the Appearance Schemas Inventory. Results . Using conservative cut-off scores the prevalence of anxiety and depression was 29.9 and 13.4%, respectively. Appearance-related beliefs were associated with both distress and psychosocial adjustment difficulties. Public but not private self-consciousness was associated with distress and psychosocial adjustment difficulties. Conclusions . Clinicians need to monitor amputees for distress over a longer time period than the initial post-operative phase. It is particularly important to assess for anxiety. Interventions that target appearance-related beliefs may be of benefit to this population. The presence of phantom pain and associated conditions was quantified using a verbal numerical scale. The data obtained were analyzed for means, medians, and proportions with their respective confidence intervals, as appropriate. Results: Seventy-five patients participated in this study, 50 men (66.7%) and 25 women (33.3%). Mean age was 54.4 years (SD ± 18.5); range 19 to 88 years. The prevalence of phantom pain was 46.7% (95%CI: 35.1 to 58.6), phantom sensation 90.7% (95%CI: 81.7 to 96.2), and surgical stump pain 32.0% (95%CI: 21.7 to 43.8). Conclusion: Phantom pain and phantom sensations are highly prevalent among cancer patients. The high-grade tumor grows in a circular, ball-like mass in the bone tissue. Before the 1970s and the advent of chemotherapy use in osteosarcoma, treatment consisted solely of amputation. More recently, a preoperative regimen of intra-arterial (IA) cisplatin and infusional doxorubicin with limb-sparing procedures has provided an effective treatment option and improved survival for many patients with osteosarcoma. IA chemotherapy is administered through a small, temporary, external catheter that rests in the arterial vessel that supplies the tumor. The primary advantage of IA chemotherapy administration is the delivery of a higher chemotherapy concentration directly to the tumor site, Nursing management of patients with IA chemotherapy requires knowledge of treatment side effects and procedure-related assessments. Further implications for practice include instructing patients and families before and after the insertion of the IA line and giving discharge and long-term follow-up education.
