The five indicators(pages viewed, pages copied, pages printed, unique documents usage, and user sessions) were identifiedto determine the extend of ebrary usage by 18 government and private institutions in the UAE based on theircounter reports. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) shows significant difference in the average of theseindicators among the 18 institutions in the UAE. Results of the study indicate that governments' institutionsoutperformed private institutions in all these indicators and the T-test confirmed the same. In general, the studyfound ebrary use is relatively low and there was no annual growth in both government and private institutions. The study found that a large number of surveyed institutions do not fully utilise ebrary services as expected. There is a need for aggressively promotion about the use of electronic resources among the faculty membersand students through appropriate training, workshops and marketing activities in all these institutions.",

Design/methodology/approach - The study uses mixed methods with survey, focus group, and usage analysis. Findings - The study found a much higher use of ebooks over print reserves. The survey and focus group responses also found a relatively high student satisfaction with the use of ebooks, despite some reported use problems. Practical implications - The results of this study offer academic libraries a new idea to consider for ebook purchases. The paper also highlights important issues to consider if purchasing ebooks to replace print reserve books. Originality/value - This is the first study to evaluate student attitudes and use of ebook \"reserve\" materials.",

"abstractNote": "E-books are a relatively new phenomenon and correspondingly, there is limited research on the factors associated with e-book usage especially in relation to printed books. In this research it is, therefore, of interest to examine antecedents of e-book usage intentions in one conceptual framework. The study was conducted using a course e-book. Findings reveal that environmental consciousness lowers the preference for printed books, and augments the design evaluation of the e-book. Personality factors impact the preference for printed books and perceived design evaluation of the e-book in different ways. A preference for printed books reduces, whereas perceived positive navigational design enhances, the attitude toward e-book usage. The findings have theoretical and practical implications. This study is one of the first to systematically study the e-book usage antecedents in a holistic manner, and also the first to examine the role of environmental consciousness in impacting e-book usage intentions in general. "abstractNote": "From a fledgling technology with no proven business models, electronic books (e-books) have grown in importance usurping traditional formats as an acquisitions budget line in many academic library contexts. Business models include purchase, subscription, and pay per use. In academic and research libraries, web based e-book delivery is the dominant platform involving desktop, Netbook and iPad user agents. E-books are the hot property of today's academic library, forming the new wave in information services along with web scale discovery and institutional repositories. This paper reports the results of a preliminary analysis of transactional e-log data describing academic and student use of Ebook Library (EBL) titles at Edith Cowan University (ECU) Library, Perth, Western Australia. The data mined and analysed encompassing Semesters One and Two of the 2010 academic year. Analysis includes descriptive statistics and other metrics describing e-book usage patterns and user behaviour. The paper compares usage patterns observed with earlier studies and reports on the phenomenon of the 'power user'. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]",
