"abstractNote": "Academic libraries devote considerable human resources in delivering library instruction programs. This study attempts to determine if these instructional efforts have any measurable effect on student performance in terms of overall grades. Library workshop attendance and graduation GPA of over 8,000 students was analyzed at Hong Kong Baptist University. It was found that, if more than one or two library workshops were offered to students within the course of their program, there was a higher tendency of workshop attendance having a positive impact on final GPA. The results indicate that library instruction has a direct correlation with student performance, but only if a certain minimum amount of instruction is provided.",

"abstractNote": "Through the example of a fourth-semester course on modern German history, this article explores the application of interactive and experiential learning models inspired by museum pedagogy. In response to the ACTFL Standards and the 2007 MLA report, the teaching of culture has become a priority and educators continue to seek innovative ways to teach culture and to attain the goals of “comparisons” and “connections,” as well as translingual and transcultural competence. This article demonstrates that museum strategies can be productively transferred to content-based foreign language instruction to provide learning experiences in which students interact critically with the objects of cultural archives. Both actual and virtual museum visits, as well as the integration of primary materials in the classroom, can further students' transcultural competence and critical thinking about the interrelations of culture and language, as well as provide intellectually and aesthetically engaging learning experiences.",

"abstractNote": "Film studies scholars rely on still images of film for teaching and research. However, two surveys administered to film and media studies graduate students at Indiana University in Bloomington showed that users are not always aware of library resources in this area. Users expressed their need for unique images created through screenshots, but they were hesitant to use them because of copyright restrictions. Many also requested further instruction in searching and using film stills, especially for publishing. This article discusses the research guide and workshop that the author created specifically for these users and addresses key issues in film still retrieval and use.",

It does so by examining the references and citations of a subset of country histories. The findings paint a dismal picture. Not only are many claims not verified through citations, those that are suffer from the choice of references used. Many of these are from only a few US government Websites or news media and few are to academic journal material. Given these results, one response would be to declare Wikipedia unsuitable for serious reference work. But another option emerges when we jettison technological determinism and look at Wikipedia as a product of a wider social context. Key to this context is a world in which information is bottled up as commodities requiring payment for access. Equally important is the problematic assumption that texts are undifferentiated bearers of knowledge. Those involved in instructional programs can draw attention to the social nature of texts to counter these assumptions and by so doing create an awareness for a new generation of Wikipedians and Wikipedia users of the need to evaluate texts (and hence citations) in light of the social context of their production and use.",

Models for reference and research help have evolved over time; they seem to be trending toward increasingly distributed services and collaborative models offered at the point of need. Reference services continue to change with the advent of various technologies that are readily integrated into the academic library environment. This article addresses these issues and examines the concept of “reference as place,” the importance of a location for reference services, and its applicability to the contemporary academic library.",

"extra": "Today’s students are critical thinkers, collaborators, and creators. They expect to participate in 21st century learning environments not as passive information consumers (think lectures), but as active contributors (think team-based problem-solving). There are opportunities for instruction librarians to collaborate directly with student-led organizations. These partnerships have the potential to increase attendance at library events and provide platforms for students to engage in richer forms of exploratory learning that incorporate 21st century skills. This article will discuss the literature surrounding library instruction collaborations, identify “Librarian – Student Organization Collaborations” as an important form of partnership, and supply specific case studies of successful library instruction events based on these collaborations.",

"extra": "It is often assumed that incoming graduate students are information literate, yet many of them lack the skills needed to effectively organize and critically evaluate research. Supporting students in acquiring information literacy skills is a critical role for universities, as it improves the quality of student research and enhances their opportunities for lifelong learning. The literature in this area has focused on the partnership between librarians and course instructors, which has been shown to produce the most effective library instruction: however, additional research is needed concerning the collaborative approach to teaching information literacy to graduate students. The current study used action research to gather information on students’ perceptions of a blend of two methods of library instruction, a web-based tutorial and an in-class library instruction session. While few students indicated engagement with the online tutorial, most students appreciated the in-class session. Recommendations for information literacy instruction and further research are included.",

WorldCat Local's faceted searching brings both educational benefits and unexpected challenges to the classroom. Instructors frequently hold formal and informal discussions on such topics as which search features are most effective during teaching and which patron groups benefit most from this tool. The authors of this article surveyed instruction librarians at U.S. academic libraries that are using WorldCat Local in order to gather and organize this feedback. This article presents the findings of this survey.",

"abstractNote": "The absence of a well-defined space for library resources within course-management systems has been well documented in library literature. Academic libraries have sought to remedy this deficiency in numerous ways. This article describes how a “library nugget,” or module, was added to the Buffalo State College course-management system, ANGEL. The nugget features direct access to the library catalog and several popular databases from within ANGEL. Links to library guides and research services are also provided. The nugget was a collaboration between reference librarians and the campus ANGEL administrator, who is the college's former systems librarian. User feedback has been extremely positive and campus database usage has soared.",
