The study of the interplay between salt marsh vegetation growth, sedimentary processes and dynamic tidal and wave processes has led to a growing recognition of the importance of bio-physical factors determining coastal landform evolution. An increased focus on bio-physical linkages that control coastal wetland functioning can also be seen in the conservation, engineering, and policy sector, due to a rising awareness of the value of coastal wetlands due to the services they provide to society. The role of salt marshes as natural sea defences is increasingly significant in the context of ever increasing coastal population densities alongside environmental pressures (e.g. sea level rise and increasing storm frequencies arising from climate change, alongside ever increasing coastal population densities). This talk reviews how advances in field, laboratory, and numerical modeling approaches have made particular inroads into the quantification of the sea defence role of coastal wetlands. The sea defence function itself is complex and context dependent. In London and the south east of England, foragers are scouting in the woods for fungi and then organised teams of pickers are arriving by the van load to collect mushrooms. Sue Ireland leads the care of 11,000 acres of green spaces - including Epping Forest in Essex, Burnham Beeches in Buckinghamshire and London's Hampstead Heath, she says its a huge problem.\n\nThe long, hot and dry summer of 2014 has resulted in a record wheat harvest. However, the volatile global commodity market has seen wheat prices fall by thirty percent leaving farmers frustrated. Mike Hambley from the NFUs combinable crop board says that farmers need to be able to buffer up their business to cope with world markets.\n\nScientists have discovered that salt marsh plants could protect our beaches; by reducing the height of damaging storm-surge waves by nearly 20%. It's the first time researchers have been able to measure the protection salt marshes could provide in our sea defences. This may have implications for the design of dike upgrades. If vegetation plays a major role in damping the impact of waves on a particular dike section, it may be possible to make savings on upgrading the dike.
