States and Canada in terms of US-Cuba relations. Castro's trip, though met by crowds of thousands at every stop, was a failure on the political and cultural levels. It failed politically because it did not reflect the policy aims of the United States or Cuba, did nothing to advance Castro's agenda, and may have contributed to the official rift between the United States and Cuba. Because of his populist appeals, Castro was at once dismissed by US officials as a mere \"cabinet member\" of the Cuban government while simultaneously reviled as a foreign leader appealing to the American public \"over the heads\" of government officials. The trip was a cultural failure because the \"good will\" generated by it was extremely short-lived and mainly among those of Latin American descent.
