Style guides and textbooks commonly portray scholarly writing as a kind of impersonal, faceless discourse, and EAP teachers direct students to remove themselves from their texts. But how realistic is this advice? In this article I briefly explore the most visible expression of a writer's presence in a text: the use of exclusive first person pronouns. I show that not all disciplines follow the same conventions of impersonality, and that in fact there is considerable scope for the negotiation of identity in academic writing. In this article, we recount how we used free-writes and various discussions in an attempt to deconstruct the power dynamics in an upper division seminar on Latinas/os and education. Though a majority of the students were first generation Latinas, middle and upper middle class white students were more likely to share their perspectives and experiences in the course. This resulted in a situation where class discussions were steered away from the focus of Latinas/os and unequal educational practices to a perspective that reinforced an ideology of equality and a climate that privileged dominant modes of classroom communication. Its specific goal is to exhibit hybrid samba-taiko percussion performance as a practice which provides Japanese-Brazilians with a space to express, construct, and realize their hybrid sociocultural identities in spite of the restrictive racial and musical constructs of contemporary Brazilian society. It provides the background to this conflict of cultural identity with a historical narrative of Japanese immigration to Brazil, and a discourse on the Brazilian cultural ideology of racial democracy. This project also serves to familiarize readers with taiko as a musical genre by outlining the historical development of kumidaiko musical practice in Japan and its development in Brazil, and to define samba-taiko’s hybrid musical characteristics through an analysis of contemporary music examples.
