"note": "
See other Kiechel for more details.
\n
Excerpts from pp. 101-105, loose translation and grammar of southern German dialect
\n
\"On the 28th at night after dinner, I set out of Grodna with a Tartar, who had a pathetic horse and coless. He had lived long in the country of these Datter or Tartars,in which they are for the most part drivers, who drive people as well as goods back and forth at little cost.
\n
Before I get much further, I want to say a few remarks about these coless that are used as wagons and also about the harness which they use on their horses. A coless is a small, narrow little vehicle, which cannot fit more than one horse to pull it and which also can't take more than one passenger per vehicle. These wagons are not more than one man long, approximately 7 feet [in die 7 schuch], and one can stretch out on it at night. It has four wheels, each of which are the same size and type of strong wood...On the entire coless or wagon--just like the bridle and harness of the horse--there are no nails, iron, leather, or rope [seyl]. The wagon is all wood; the horse's harness is woven from raffia [Bast]. As the area is especially full of trees with this wood, that a Lithuanian [Littau] sits down on a tree and makes himself a pair of shoes from the tree and the whole harness that helps the horse pull. Everything is made of raffia and woven together.
\n
And with this, I return to my travel account. We arrived at 3 in the morning [nacht] to a village named Ostcha, which is 2 miles from Grodna.
\n
The 29th. Early with the day away, as the aforementioned Tartars do not fodder in the afternoons. In case of emergency, they have provisions with them. And when they arrive in some place in the woods or on a green clearing, they let the horses out of the harness and let them graze. In summer time at night, they frequently lie out in the field. If the weather is dry, each one lies on top of the coless or wagon; if it rains, each one lies under the wagon or however he can best help himself.
\n
I could not talk with my Tartar and there was only one other coless, on which a Polish student rode and with whom I once again had to use my Latin. We came this evening into an open little city named Meretsch, 10 miles from the town this morning. We couldn't get anything that night. The restaurant or shop [Krug] was completely full of locals and polish nobles...
\n
The 30th and last of the month we traveled away very early in the morning. As we were about a mile into the fields, the lord of the last little town drove a carriage towards us, on which he had 6 horses pulling and next to it 20 traveling horses, which hunted in the field with quite a few dogs. And as he came to us, he told us to stop. He asked me in Polish who I was and where I came from and also where I wanted to go. I understood only a little of this so he called over a servant, who spoke good German and to whom I gave a truthful answer, and then the lord let us drive away. As we moved away 2 or 3 steps [Rohrschiss], the aforementioned servant runs quickly to us and says to me: what kind of behavior is this- speaking with such a great lord and not getting down from the wagon? This had insulted the lord, and the servant said that his lord had instructed him to knock me out of the coless. After this exchange, I dismounted as quickly as I was able, begged the servant's pardon, and told him that I hadn't known that it was customary [gebreichig] when one man met another in the field, that he should dismount on that occasion. I spoke in the politest way that I could, gave the servant the best words, and then I feared for my skin...These Poles are a proud, high and mighty people, particularly about honor/mistakes [ihren] or where they are in charge [gebueeten]. Whether the servant did this for himself or on his lord's order, I don't know. To me it seemed like a very long time before I got away from them.
\n
In the evening we camped by a brook, and the drivers let the horses graze the pasture and run around the whole night in the grass. We made a good fire and camped by it.
\n
Early in the morning, we travelled away and in 3 hours had arrived in the city Vilna or Wuelde. It has a horrible [hasslich] forest and a very steep incline leading up through it before one comes to a large valley in which there are many fields [Fleckhen] and villages, of which there were about 30, in which Tartars live. They are in the pay of the king from Poland. When he orders or desires, they much let themselves be used in war.
\n
The aforementioned nation [Nation] is a hard, coarse, and hardy people that nourish themselves poorly [ringfueg]. When they have an old horse that is no longer useful, they ride it for an hour or two unti it's hot or very sweaty. Treating it the same as an ox or some other animal, they then slit its throat, butcher it, and eat. They live almost completely miserably [halb ganz elendigluechen].
\n
From the mentioned villages, it was 2 miles to the city, at which I arrived in good time on the 1st of July. From Meretsch to Vilna or Wuelde is 14 miles. This is the principal and capital city of Lithuania, whose territory is called a grand-dutchy...Besides the Martinists, the city has many religions and sects, which all have their churches and official practices [exercitia]- Catholic, Calvinists, Jesuits, Russians or Moscowites, Anabaptists [Wuedertaufer], Zwinglians, and Jews, who have synagogues and organized meetings. Then too are the heathens [heueden] or Tartars...
\n
I had the opportunity to travel to Lapland and joined a Westphalian merchant who wanted to take a path to Riga. According to these plans, 2 Tartars would drive us. Because we did not have much confidence in them, we demanded that they give us security--as is customary for them--for better safety...Then I paid 4 Gulden for my particular coless or wagon (and that no one rode with me) from Wuelde to Riga--whether or not it was 40 or 42 German miles (pp.101-105).\"
",
