hmmmm... the media have been using this phrase (king hit) for at least 100 years in Australia. You can see this for yourself by consulting trove (National Library of Australia service). Apparently, the phrase grew out of an incident that happened way back in 1608. King James I was the perpetrator. It was a childish and cowardly act back then, and has continued to be the resort of slow witted cowards ever since.
