The writers suggest that more research be done on the topic and that future studies’ research be done in an ethnically appropriate fashion. The research for this article was provided by the National Autistic Society, and the article suggests that children with autism can learn better from computer assisted instruction. Children with autism who were studied showed an increase interest and attention span in learning how to read from computer-based instruction, which is concluded to play a part in the higher scores of the children tested. Even one child shouted “No book!” during the study, a way to communicate that he or she did not want to practice reading from a traditional book, but rather from the computer-based device being utilized during the study. Overall, the research showed a small increase in reading scores amongst the students who used a computer-based learning instruction over the children who used traditional materials.
