"abstractNote": "The sense of presence has been the main goal of many virtual reality systems. Consequently, many research results have identified elements that contribute to high presence. However, there has been little work in applying such results to specific system and application design. In this paper, we present a model of presence that is based on the capabilities and evolutionary nature of the human perceptual system. We illustrate how we apply the model to configuring a particular virtual reality display device, the ImmersaDesk (I-desk) for a simple VR-based motion rehabilitation application. In this example, one of the important presence factors was the seamlessness and continuity (or spatial coherence) between the virtual space and the user's physical operating space. To address this problem, we present a method for correctly aligning the virtual space to the physical space.",

A sparse environment was created and a set of localization tasks requiring that angle estimates be made to three landmarks was presented to two sets of subjects, one given feedback and one not. This is related to the on-going research results concerning development of the crowd simulation for interactive virtual environments. The simulation aims to reproduce realistic scenarios involving large number of the virtual human agents. We define interactive VE as an architecture of multi-agent system allowing behaviors of the agents to interact among them, with the virtual environment as well as with the real human participants. The first behavior is known as Collective behavior. One of collective behavior to be described in this paper is maximum dispersion for the group of three agents. There are some complexities in identifying the procedure for maximum dispersion behavior among three agents. For experimenting with the determined procedures, the path planning of crowd dispersion in the building environment at the time of emergency situation is applied. With this complex and critical environment an experiment is carried out and the result of simulating maximum dispersion behavior of agents is, discussed.",

Traditional media such as the telephone, radio, television, film, and many others offer a lesser degree of presence as well. This article examines the key concept of presence. It begins by noting practical and theoretical reasons for studying this concept. Six conceptualizations of presence found in a diverse set of literatures are identified and a detailed explication of the concept that incorporates these conceptualizations is presented. Existing research and speculation about the factors that encourage or discourage a sense of presence in media users as well as the physiological and psychological effects of presence are then outlined. Finally, suggestions concerning future systematic research about presence are presented.",

"abstractNote": "'The paradox of landscape' is that, in theory, landscape aspires to a totality of human experience, but in practice it suppresses the complexity of the human experience. By supposing a 'landscape perspective' in the past, archaeologists are imposing a modern view of the world. In consequence, more varied perspectives should be considered during any archaeological inquiry. This is not a criticism of the use of landscape as a term to distinguish the wider spatial relationships between places which exist in the present. What is suggested as being unjustifiable is the use of the 'landscape perspective' to orientate and contextualize past human experience. This critique is illustrated and complemented by a case-study examining prehistoric land enclosure in Britain.",

"abstractNote": "This is a clip from the 2002 documentary 'McLuhan's Wake' released by the National Film Board of Canada. The film is based upon the book 'Laws of Media'. After Marshall McLuhans death, his son, Eric McLuhan, completed this remaining work. In it McLuhan lays down four laws as questions regarding new media/technologies:\n\nWhat does it enhance or intensify? \nWhat does it render obsolete or replace? \nWhat does it retrieve that was previously obsolesced? \nWhat does it produce or become when pushed to an extreme? \n\nMarshall McLuhan called this a tetrad and said it could be applied to any human artifact.\n\nIf we think about evolution and systems the tetrad can be applied to anything.\n\nConsider this: you have an ecological system and a new organism evolves. How do you assess the impact? McLuhans tetrad is a perfect template for that analysis in the same way you would assess a human artifact. \n\nWe live in societies based on technologies, and Marshall McLuhan is consistently proven correct with his Laws of Media:\n\nevery new medium:\n\n1. extends a human property (the car extends the foot);\n\n2. obsolesces the previous medium by turning it into a sport or a form of art (the automobile turns horses and carriages into sports);\n\n3. retrieves a much older medium that was obsolesced before (the automobile brings back the shining armour of the chevalier);\n\n4. flips or reverses its properties into the opposite effect when pushed to its limits (the automobile, when there are too many of them, create traffic jams, that is total paralysis).\n\nEvery new technology has these four effects on all of us, including learning technologies. If you dont understand the effects of the technologies that we use, how can you understand their pedagogical implications?\n\n\nHerbert Marshall McLuhan, C.C. (July 21, 1911 December 31, 1980) was a Canadian educator, philosopher, and scholar — a professor of English literature, a literary critic, a rhetorician, and a communications theorist. McLuhan's work is viewed as one of the cornerstones of the study of media theory. McLuhan is known for coining the expressions \"the medium is the message\" and the \"global village.\"\n\nMcLuhan was a fixture in media discourse from the late 1960s to his death and he continues to be an influential and controversial figure. More than ten years after his death he was named the \"patron saint\" of Wired magazine.\n\nhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_McLuhan",

"abstractNote": "Recent years have seen renewed interest in the ancient idea of a [`]sense of place' amongst architects, planners and researchers in a number of countries. In contrast to technological fix solutions which appear to by-pass people, concern with the creation and preservation of [`]places' reflects an attempt to provide an optimum psychological fit between people and their physical surroundings. This paper considers [`]placemaking': the degree to which a [`]place' can be created in architectural design independently of the people who eventually use it. Different approaches to the study of [`]place' in architecture, geography and psychology are reviewed. It is argued that modern architecture has concentrated on the properties of geometric space, while psychology has neglected the physical context of behaviour and experiences. The concept of place should help to integrate design and research issues. A politics of place and the design and research of place patterns are discussed. It is concluded that it is not possible to create a place for building users solely by manipulating the physical environment on [`]their' behalf.",

"abstractNote": "Creative thinking is a complex cognitive activity. Modern conceptions of creativity are so diverse and extensive that a definition of creativity must include related cognitive activities such as decision making, critical thinking, and metacognition. A comprehensive assessment requires multiple measures of the cognitive processes, motivations, interests, attitudes, and styles associated with creativity; the result of the creative process such as products, presentations, and performances; and the effects of environmental press factors. Creative thinking and creative problem solving are aspects of human cognition and behavior that can be accessed through a number of strategies often incorporated in training programs. These programs focus on one or more of the following: personality factors, motivation, cognition styles, metacognitive skills, and the manipulation of environmental conditions that encourage flexibility and openness for stimulating creative processes and behaviors. This article reviews theories, models, and research on creative behavior and then explores connections with assessment issues. It offers a synthesis of the basic constructs related to creative production.",

"abstractNote": "Modern-day tourism has profoundly affected the environment from its very beginning. The development of the seaside resorts in the early 19th century marked the first production of\nleisure space on a large scale; it delimited, structured and marketed an environment for tourist consumption (Meethan, 2001). But even prior to these ‘industrialized’ tourist spaces, the Grand Tours of the late 18th century provided first instances of an organized consumption of foreign environments. Such tourist encounters with other cultures and environments often focused on the tangible, on material objects. Travelers such as Lord Byron, tourist Elgins on a smaller scale, brought back marbles in the 1810s; in the early 20th century, George Grey\nBarnard and James Rorimer, with the financial aid of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., brought back whole European monasteries to produce Rockefeller’s vision of The Cloisters, a museum\nand/or medieval theme park in New York. The Cloisters is itself the centerpiece of a yet\nanother, larger leisure space, Fort Tryon Park. Rockefeller had donated this 56-acre public park to the City in an attempt to preserve some of the natural, wooded landscape of northern Manhattan (Forsyth 1992). The whole ensemble – the park, the European materials used for\nthe buildings with their multiple histories, and their new design (which was partly inspired by\nWalter Scott’s Kenilworth) – is an uneasy fusion of the ‘natural’, the ‘historical’ and the ‘fictional’; it produces a tourist space that is, in a manner of speaking, already partly virtual.",

"abstractNote": "The Virtual Site Museum is an interactive virtual reality interface for various purposes including archaeological research, education, and public demonstration. Its virtual environment contains precise, authoritative, and integrated archaeological and historical files culled from published and unpublished excavation records and the various art museums, which preserve artifacts from the real archaeological site. Running in real-time, it provides full-body immersion, 3D ancient figure animation, and a virtual artifacts interface and corresponding user-oriented interactions in a functional virtual environment. The first of the sites to be documented in the Virtual Site Museum was the Northwest Palace of King Ashurnasirpal II (883–859 bc), located in northeastern Iraq, a famous Assyrian world heritage archaeological site. In this paper we describe how we applied Virtual Reality (VR) to a cultural heritage in peril, and how we are adapting previously generated PC versions to UNIX platforms. We also explain our experiences and achievements in archaeological research and classroom accessibility.",
