"abstractNote": "From the outset, digital preservation and conservation seem to be two very different\nprofessions. This paper explores the idea that both traditional and digital conservators\nnot only have many commonalties but also an invaluable knowledge bank of their\nown areas of expertise, which should be shared between these seemingly distinct\ncommunities. Preservation Services and the Digital Preservation team from the\nNational Library of Australia (NLA) discuss the commonalities between the two\nprofessions. Digital preservation is a relatively young and innovative discipline, while\nconservation has undergone its own phases of growth and innovation to become a\nprofession that is steeped in tried and tested methodologies and techniques. This\nanalysis of the common challenges shared by the Conservation team and the Digital\nPreservation team at the NLA illustrates the lessons that can be learned and shared\nbetween the two. With multiple linkages between digital preservation and\nconservation, the common ethos that both communities are committed to preserving\nculture and heritage emerges and is defined. Practitioners working in conservation and\ndigital preservation need to commit to a holistic approach to preserving collections.\nPreservation practitioners all work towards ensuring the longevity of cultural\ncollections using a variety of methods, approaches, tools and principles, and only the\nformats of these collections differ.",

"abstractNote": "E-Science, cyberinfrastructure – these ideas are at the heart of the great ambitions and promise of science in the new century. The last several decades of network- and computer-enabled work in science have produced untold amounts of data, leading to the challenge of developing practices to manage and provide access to this data. Along with oceans of data and technology, changes in the conduct and nature of science – notably new collaborative and computational science practices – present both novel requirements and exciting opportunities to succeed in meeting this challenge.1 A global effort is emerging to take collective responsibility for a growing yet still vulnerable investment in scientific data as a permanent part of scientific research communications and practices.\n\nToday, everyone with a role in the traditional infrastructure of scientific research and communication is jockeying for a role in the emerging landscape of scientific data: national libraries; research funding agencies; universities and research libraries; and giants of the software and publishing industries. As roles and responsibilities get sorted out, librarians are testing the waters to identify what present and future roles they may have in these developments; but these are early days, and it is still unclear what those roles may be.\n\nFor information professionals, getting to know the concepts and issues raised in the name of cyberinfrastructure and E-Science is no mean feat. There has been an outpouring of lengthy reports addressing and framing their challenges, and the result is a ferment of ideas, vocabularies, organizations and strategies. Becoming literate in cyberinfrastructure means understanding cyberinfrastructure, E-Science, collaboratories, collaboration science, computational and grid science, data curation, the Semantic Web, open data, data archiving, digital preservation, and data management, and how they relate to each other.\n\nWhile this learning curve is one factor, a second challenge adds to the difficulty that librarians have engaging in these issues: data science and data management are an awkward fit with the text-oriented constructs and systems that still dominate library relationships with science communication and publishing. Most librarians are much less familiar with the data-generating research phases of the scientific research cycle than with post-research phases of reporting, communication and publication.\n\nFinally, add to these challenges the technical background needed to understand, even at a general level, the technologies that may be used in data management. Language itself becomes a barrier to understanding. When used in discussions of E-Science, a vocabulary familiar to librarians (archival, curation, stewardship, provenance) takes on new or specialized meaning.\n\nDespite these challenges, the library profession has been eager to grapple with the new issues presented by scientific data as a part of the scholarly record. Major professional organizations, among them the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T), the American Library Association (ALA), and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), are sponsoring or leading activities with a focus on cyberinfrastructure and scientific data. A major milestone in this growing interest is the initiative launched in 2006 by ARL, a Task Force on E-Science.2 The purposes of this ongoing E-Science initiative include exploring and addressing gaps in awareness and understanding within the profession; as well as positioning research libraries alongside research funding agencies and research universities and organizations, as contributors and partners in dealing with the immense challenges of managing and preserving access to digital scientific data.\n\nShortly after the Task Force was established, ARL and the National Science Foundation (NSF) co-sponsored an invitational workshop in October 2006 on the topic of digital data stewardship. An executive summary of the workshop was published3 reaching a broad audience of library leaders and professionals. Yet even this brief and relatively accessible article, focused on the roles of libraries and librarians in E-Science, presumes a fairly high level of general understanding of the relevant issues and vocabulary as well as familiarity with a host of stakeholders engaged in the field of digital data management.4\n\nThe following two-part article is offered to help open up the discussion with library practitioners working directly with research faculty and graduate students, advising on issues of scholarly communication, and concerned with providing relevant data services in the context of relatively well-established library-based data support programs in GIS, social science data, and bioinformatics. Part 1 provides a primer for librarians on cyberinfrastructure, including an overview of major issues and readings to help locate the issues in the larger national and global framework, as well as an introduction to emerging critiques of global cyberinfrastructure theory. Part 2 offers an overview and analysis of current theories about the roles libraries and librarians can have associated with the multiple dimensions of cyberinfrastructure.",

"abstractNote": "The effective long-term curation of digital content requires expert analysis, policy setting, and decision making, and a robust technical infrastructure that can effect and enforce curation policies and implement appropriate curation activities. Since the number, size, and diversity of content under curation management will undoubtedly continue to grow over time, and the state of curation understanding and best practices relative to that content will undergo a similar constant evolution, one of the overarching design goals of a sustainable curation infrastructure is flexibility. In order to provide the necessary flexibility of deployment and configuration in the face of potentially disruptive changes in technology, institutional mission, and user expectation, a useful design metaphor is provided by the Unix pipeline, in which complex behavior is an emergent property of the coordinated action of a number of simple independent components. The decomposition of repository function into a highly granular and orthogonal set of independent but interoperable micro-services is consistent with the principles of prudent engineering practice. Since each micro-service is small and self-contained, they are individually more robust and collectively easier to implement and maintain. By being freely interoperable in various strategic combinations, any number of micro-services-based repositories can be easily constructed to meet specific administrative or technical needs. Importantly, since these repositories are purposefully built from policy neutral and protocol and platform independent components to provide the function minimally necessary for a specific context, they are not constrained to conform to an infrastructural monoculture of prepackaged repository solutions. The University of California Curation Center has developed an open source micro-services infrastructure that is being used to manage the diverse digital collections of the ten campus University system and a number of non-university content partners. This paper provides a review of the conceptual design and technical implementation of this micro-services environment, a case study of initial deployment, and a look at ongoing micro-services developments.",

"abstractNote": "This paper is an extended and updated version of the work reported at iPres 2008. Digital\npreservation activities can only succeed if they go beyond the technical properties of digital objects.\nThey must consider the strategy, policy, goals, and constraints of the institution that undertakes\nthem and take into account the cultural and institutional framework in which data, documents and\nrecords are preserved. Furthermore, because organizations differ in many ways, a one-size-fits-all\napproach cannot be appropriate. Fortunately, organizations involved in digital preservation have\ncreated documents describing their policies, strategies, work-flows, plans, and goals to provide\nguidance. They also have skilled staff who are aware of sometimes unwritten considerations. Within\nPlanets (Farquhar & Hockx-Yu, 2007), a four-year project co-funded by the European Union to\naddress core digital preservation challenges, we have analyzed preservation guiding documents and\ninterviewed staff from libraries, archives, and data centres that are actively engaged in digital\npreservation. This paper introduces a conceptual model for expressing the core concepts and\nrequirements that appear in preservation guiding documents. It defines a specific vocabulary that\ninstitutions can reuse for expressing their own policies and strategies. In addition to providing a\nconceptual framework, the model and vocabulary support automated preservation planning tools\nthrough an XML representation1.",

"abstractNote": "The Penn State University Libraries and Information Technology Services (ITS) collaborated on the development of Curation Architecture Prototype Services (CAPS), a web application for ingest and management of digital objects. CAPS was built atop a prototype service platform providing atomistic curation functions in order to address the current and emerging requirements in the Libraries and ITS for digital curation, defined as “... maintaining and adding value to a trusted body of digital information for future and current use; specifically, the active management and appraisal of data over the entire life cycle” (Pennock, 2006)[7]. Key goals for the CAPS project were application of an agile methodology to the development process and an assessment of the resulting tool and stakeholders’ experience in the project. This article focuses in particular on the community-building aspects of CAPS, which emerged from a combination of agile-style approaches and the development team's commitment to engaging stakeholders actively throughout the process, from the construction of use cases, to decisions on metadata standards, to ingest and management functionalities of the tool. The ensuing community of curatorial practice effectively set the stage for the next iteration of CAPS: planning and executing the development of a production-ready, enterprise-quality infrastructure to support publishing and curation services at Penn State.",

"abstractNote": "The Digital Preservation Program of the California Digital Library (CDL) is \nengaged in a process of\nreinvention involving significant transformations of its outlook, effort, and infrastructure. This\nincludes a re-articulation of its mission in terms of digital curation, rather than preservation;\nencouraging a programmatic, rather than a project-oriented approach to curation activities; and a\nrenewed emphasis on services, rather than systems. This last shift was motivated by a desire to\ndeprecate the centrality of the repository as place. Having the repository as the locus for curation\nactivity has resulted in the deployment of a somewhat cumbersome monolithic system that falls\nshort of desired goals for responsiveness to rapidly changing user needs and operational and\nadministrative sustainability. The Program is pursuing a path towards a new curation environment\nbased on the principle of devolving curation function to a set of small, simple, loosely coupled\nservices. In considering this new infrastructure, the Program is relying upon a highly deliberative\nprocess starting from first principles drawn from library and archival science. This is followed by a\nstagewise progression of identifying core preservable values, devising strategies promoting those\nvalues, defining abstract services embodying those strategies, and, finally, developing systems that\ninstantiate those services. This paper presents a snapshot of the Program’s transformative efforts in its early phase.",

"abstractNote": "This primer is one in a series of Operational Policy documents being developed by GeoConnections. It is intended to inform Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) stakeholders about the nature and scope of digital geospatial data archiving and preservation and the realities, challenges and good practices of related operational policies. Burgeoning growth of online geospatial applications and the deluge of data, combined with the growing complexity of archiving and preserving digital data, has revealed a significant gap in the operational policy coverage for the Canadian geospatial data infrastructure (CGDI). Currently there is no commonly accepted guidance for CGDI stakeholders wishing or mandated to preserve their geospatial data assets for long-term access and use. More specifically, there is little or no guidance available to inform operational policy decisions on how to manage, preserve and provide access to a digital geospatial data collection. The preservation of geospatial data over a period of time is especially important when datasets are required to inform modeling applications such as climate change impact predictions, flood forecasts and land use management. Furthermore, data custodians may have both a legal and moral responsibility to implement effective archiving and preservation programs. Based on research and analysis of the Canadian legislative framework and current international practices in digital data archiving and preservation, this primer provides guidance on the factors to be considered and the steps to be taken in planning and implementing a data archiving and preservation program. It describes an approach to establishing a geospatial data archives based on good practices from the literature and Canadian case studies. This primer will provide CGDI stakeholders with information on how to incorporate archiving and preservation considerations into an effective data management process that covers the entire life cycle (DCC, 2013) (LAC, 20",

The report is based primarily on research of available documents and literature, supplemented by consultations with a primary stakeholder, Library and Archives Canada (LAC). The report is structured in nine chapters, including this introduction. The second chapter provides a synopsis and analysis of some of the more significant legislative requirements for the archiving and preservation of Canadas geospatial data. The third chapter reports on the consultation with Library and Archives Canada concerning their guidelines and best practices that might be used across government. Chapter 4 assesses geospatial considerations in Canadas current information management policy, highlighting key Treasury Board policies and directives. The fifth and sixth chapters report the results of an environmental scan of Canadian consultations and reports and Canadian research on digital data archiving and preservation, respectively. Chapter 7 identifies some best practices based on an environmental scan of geospatial data archiving and preservation in Canada and abroad. The eighth chapter identifies a few business models for archiving and preservation, especially those that promote cooperation and sharing responsibility and costs for preservation activities. The final chapter provides conclusions drawn from the research findings and analysis and recommendations for follow up action.",

"abstractNote": "Reliably erasing data from storage media (sanitizing the\nmedia) is a critical component of secure data manage-\nment. While sanitizing entire disks and individual files is\nwell-understood for hard drives, flash-based solid state\ndisks have a very different internal architecture, so it\nis unclear whether hard drive techniques will work for\nSSDs as well.\nWe empirically evaluate the effectiveness of hard\ndrive-oriented techniques and of the SSDs’ built-in san-\nitization commands by extracting raw data from the\nSSD’s flash chips after applying these techniques and\ncommands. Our results lead to three conclusions:\nFirst, built-in commands are effective, but manufactur-\ners sometimes implement them incorrectly. Second,\noverwriting the entire visible address space of an SSD\ntwice is usually, but not always, sufficient to sanitize the\ndrive. Third, none of the existing hard drive-oriented\ntechniques for individual file sanitization are effective on\nSSDs.\nThis third conclusion leads us to develop flash trans-\nlation layer extensions that exploit the details of flash\nmemory’s behavior to efficiently support file sanitization.\nOverall, we find that reliable SSD sanitization requires\nbuilt-in, verifiable sanitize operations.",
