The aim of this scheme was to improve water quality before the effluent discharges to the natural wetlands. The biggest problem with the quality of the effluent is its high nutrient loading. With\nthe recent changes to license\nconditions imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency, the existing treatment plant no longer complies with\nthe license and an upgrade of the plant was required.\nInstead of traditional upgrades, a new and innovative phyto-remedial technology recently developed in Queensland by the\nDepartment of Natural Resources and Mines, is being implemented at Toogoolawah. Under the\nVetiver System, the effluent is being treated in two stages:\n•Preliminary treatment of the pond effluent in situ by floating pontoons placed in the ponds, and by vetiver planting around the edges of the three sewerage ponds.\n•Main treatment by vetiver wetlands, once the effluent exits the sewerage ponds it passes through a Vetiver Grass contoured wetlands. The Vetiver Grass takes up the water and in particular the grass will remove the nutrients from the water that passes through it. As vetiver grass system is very effective\nin removing nutrient load s, it is expected that once the wetlands is properly established there should be no release of sewerage effluent from the treatment plant except in times of heavy rainfall. Potential Applications to Septic Systems

Secondary Treatment w/ Vetiver: optimized at 20L/min 1D flow, it can be expected to treat 30g of N and ~3500mg P in eight days. This is flow from a septic tank.

Can this system be used to inexpensively treat remote systems in trouble areas? Consider application in a place like Lower Hood Canal which is primarily surrounded by septic systems leaking/discharging into a water body becoming more and more anoxic.
