Some services have shown sharp declines, while demand for others has increased. In general, many of the time-consuming clerical routines have been replaced by a more sophisticated suite of services and technological advancements. This shift has required a more fluid and flexible organizational structure that is collaborative and adaptive. It has also demanded that staff have a higher set of both technical and public service skills. Looking ahead, there are many emerging issues that could fundamentally change the role and function of access services departments in academic libraries, possibly even eliminating the need for such a structure. This paper looks at the changes that have occurred over nearly two decades, describes some of the disruptive developments that are on the horizon, and suggests new roles that access services staff may assume in the future.
\n

",

This article outlines why extraverted approaches are more effective than introverted approaches. It also details how to develop an extraverted program. First, librarians must lay the groundwork for their program. Then, after matching librarians to courses, each librarian should utilize course syllabi to create content that is both course and assignment specific before delivering tips to students at just the right moments. Included is discussion on how to develop both text-based and video-based tips. Finally, this article discusses how to maintain your tips for future use. The intent of the model is to reverse the trend of students using only convenient and previously established resources that may not be best suited for their research goals while also emphasizing the value of librarians as resources.
\n

",

"abstractNote": "Objectives -- The purpose of this review is to examine the development of embedded librarianship, its multiple meanings, and activities in practice. The review will also report on published outcomes and future research needs of embedded librarian programs. Methods -- A search of current literature was conducted and summarized searching PubMed, CINAHL, Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (EBSCO), Academic Search Complete, and ERIC (EBSCO) through August 23, 2012. Articles were selected for inclusion in the review if they reported research findings related to embedded librarianship, if they provided unique case reports about embedded librarian programs, or if they provided substantive editorial comments on the topic. Relevant study findings were assessed for quality and presented in tabular and narrative form. Results -- Currently, there is disparity in how embedded librarianship is being defined and used in common practice, ranging from embedding an online component into a single course to full physical and cultural integration into an academic college or business unit of an organization. Activities of embedded librarians include creating course integrated instruction modules for either face-to-face or online courses, providing in depth research assistance to students or faculty, and co-locating within colleges or customer units via office hours for a few hours to all hours per week. Several case reports exist in the recent literature. Few high quality research studies reporting outcomes of librarians or library programs labeled as embedded exist at this point. Some evidence suggests that embedded librarians are effective with regards to student learning of information literacy objectives. Surveys suggest that both students and faculty appreciate embedded librarian services. Conclusion -- Most published accounts discuss librarians embedding content and ready access to services in an online course management system. A few notable cases describe the physical and cultural integration of librarians into the library user environs. Future research using valid quantitative methods is needed to explore the impact of large scale, customized, embedded programs.[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]",

The aim will be to assess how much real transformation these applications are bringing about, in terms of creating genuine user benefit and also changing everyday library practice.
\n
Design/methodology/approach – An overview of the present state of development of the electronic book (e-book), looking at perceptions in the popular press, statistical data from reputable sources, recent findings from the publicly funded quango Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), consultants funded by JISC, individual comment from well-informed writers and observations from contemporary library practice.
\n
Findings – The paper finds that the e-book has not proven itself as a transformational technology in the context of library services, nor as a consumer product to be sold directly to end users. It does have the potential to be so, if certain problems related to usability, business models and library finding tools are addressed.
\n
Research limitations/implications – This paper does not engage in a research level investigation of the subject, but does acknowledge and support JISC's recommendations for future research, while putting these into the context of everyday library practice.
\n
Practical implications – This paper outlines some of the practical challenges faced by librarians in the implementation of e-book services. These are not always sufficiently acknowledged by publicly funded research that takes place away from the arena of everyday practice.
\n
PDF available.
\n

",

            "note": "
Abstract
\n
Since the beginning of the 1990s, new types of learning spaces at academic libraries have emerged mainly in North America. They are called “information commons” or “learning commons.” They provide various kinds of services, facilities, and materials in one location to support students’ learning. The idea of learning commons has been introduced to colleges and universities in Japan as well. The purpose of this study is to examine the present condition of learning spaces in university libraries in Japan. A questionnaire was sent to 755 main or central libraries at colleges and universities. The response rate was 69.4%. The results of the survey are as follows: (a) simple collaborative learning spaces with desk/desks and chairs have become modestly widespread, while advanced spaces with equipment for information and communication technology, such as computers or projectors, are not common; (b) many libraries provide computer clusters; and (c) cafés and/or beverage vending machines in libraries are still few in number. The survey also reveals that learning commons in Japan are in the early stage of development. Various types of learning spaces are recognized as learning commons. They range from a group learning room with Wi-Fi access to an entire learning commons, where several kinds of facilities, services, and information resources to support students’ learning in one location are provided. This diversification may be based on the confusion caused by the rapid introduction of learning commons in Japan. Many learning spaces may rebuild their own services in the near future because of their students’ needs
",

An examination of the evolution of our reference services over the past 10 years suggests strategies and innovative approaches that may well inform future service directions. The purpose of this article is to capture the University of Michigan experience as a way to better understand this evolution and, in doing so, to offer critical concepts to consider when thinking about the development of current and future reference services.
\n

",

The authors illustrate how, through the use of a coordinated marketing plan, librarians applied marketing principles to select a target audience, create promotional designs, organize events, and assess campaign effectiveness. The authors express how libraries can construct cost-effective yet comprehensive marketing campaigns, as well as learn from both unexpected successes and shortcomings of such projects. Ultimately, these takeaways can inform a library's future marketing endeavors.
\n

",

The survey determined that Access Services Departments in ARL Libraries typically contain a core set of services, though their structure is based on local needs. Most ARL Libraries have not experimented with combining reference and circulation functions and have only begun to consolidate traditional Access Services areas at single service points. The author recommends that Access Services be organized around a public services point instead of organizing the department around areas that provide some kind of access to library materials.
\n

",
