This new form of learning begins with the knowledge and practices acquired in school but is equally suited for continuous, lifelong learning that extends beyond formal schooling. A new approach to learning is needed---one characterized by a 'demand-pull' rather than the traditional 'supply-push' mode of building up an inventory of knowledge in students' heads. Demand-pull learning shifts the focus to enabling participation in flows of action, where the focus is both on 'learning to be' through enculturation into a practice as well as on collateral learning. Recent research has called for methods to access, represent, and communicate what successful school leaders know. Aristotle’s concept of “phronesis,” or practical wisdom, captures the scope of such knowledge but also points out the difficulties of representing practical knowledge apart from the context of exercise. This article argues that the artifacts, such as policies, programs, and procedures, that school leaders develop and use can serve as occasions to document the expression of phronesis in context.
