The importance of such models is discussed, along with the need for a significant change in the role of subject-matter structure in instruction. A “zoom-lens” analogy is presented to facilitate an understanding of the elaboration model of instruction. Some basic concepts and principles upon which the model is based are described. The basic unvarying components of the elaboration model are described. And finally, some variations in the model for different kinds of goals are described. The elaboration model follows a general-to-detailed pattern of sequencing, as opposed to the hierarchically based sequences derived from Gagné-type task analyses.",

"abstractNote": "Curricula authoring is a complex process, involving different actors and different kinds of knowledge. Learners aim at acquiring expertise about some topic of their own interest, and need to perceive that the curriculum they attend will lead them toward their goal; when this does not happen, they become demotivated. Learners are all different, not only in their aims but also in their background knowledge and skills; curricula must carefully be tailored to the learner’s individual traits: when this does not happen, curricula are not effective from a pedagogical perspective. On the other hand, it is not possible to leave learners alone in the design of a curriculum because this activity involves both knowledge about the topics to teach, and knowledge about teaching itself. It is one of the tasks of the school to support curricula authoring so as to guarantee the correctness of the result w.r.t. the teaching goals and to pedagogical strategies. In this article, we face the problem of authoring personalized curricula and propose a modular, layered architecture that accounts for the representation of learning resources, of the domain model, of the learner, and of pedagogical constraints, with the aim of supporting different validation tasks. The representation combines a Semantic Web approach to annotation with a declarative representation in linear temporal logic. The validation layer of the proposed architecture includes different kinds of inter-conceptual, post-construction verifications, all of which can be realized by means of model checking techniques. The article also reports about a prototype implementation based on the Personal Reader for education, a framework that supplies to its users personalization functionalities implemented in a service- oriented fashion.",

"abstractNote": "Chunking models offer a parsimonious explanation of how people acquire knowledge and have been validated in domains such as expert behaviour and the acquisition of language. In this paper, we review two computational theories based on chunking mechanisms (the chunking theory and the template theory) and show what insight they offer for instruction and training. The suggested implications include the importance of perception in learning, the cost of acquiring knowledge, the significance of segmenting and ordering instruction material, the role of the variability of the instructional material in acquiring schemata, and the importance of taking individual differences into account.",

"abstractNote": "Integrated curriculum is currently being advocated in the United States to 'solve' many of the curriculum problems confronting education. Models of curriculum inte- gration permeate the professional literature, yet there is little consensus as to exactly what is meant by integrated curriculum and how to establish such curricula in the publicly funded schools. The language of curriculum integration is confusing and leads to uncertainty and concern about the potential of integrated curriculum to impact positively on schools. Placing the models on a curriculum continuum will reveal that they range from traditional discipline-based, objective-driven, teacher- controlled models to interest-based, student exploration. Although historically research supports integrative curriculum, there is a paucity of current research which would support arguments for restructuring the American curriculum in this fashion. Additionally, there is a great deal of resistance to change both from within and outside the educational community to massive curriculum restructuring",

Curriculum serves as a comprehensive guide for instruction and day-to-day interactions with young children and is conceptualized as the foundation upon which services are systematically designed, implemented, and evaluated (Division for Early Childhood, 2007; Hojnoski & Missall, 2006; Pretti-Frontczak, Jackson, McKeen, & Bricker, 2008). A framework is defined as underlying support or a means by which information can be classified and organized. Thus, we use the term curriculum framework to mean the underlying support or foundation from with all practices related to promoting children’s growth and development are identified, implemented, and evaluated.",
