the Knowledge Network on Urban Settings of the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health in the work of Regions and Member States. The tool is a product of collaboration between the WHO Kobe Centre and the regional focal points for the Knowledge Network on Urban Settings.\nThe tool is intended to assist Ministries of Health in systematically generating evidence to assess and respond to unfair health conditions and inequity in the urban setting. At the same time, it strongly emphasizes the importance of interventions to counteract unfair health conditions and inequity. It is hoped that the tool will stimulate city-to-city learning as well as sharing of experiences between countries and across Regions.\nAt this stage, the tool will be pre-tested in selected countries and the lessons learnt will be used to further refine the tool in preparation for pilots-in low-- and middle-income countries in 2008–09, leading to hopefully universal uptake in years to come.\nUrban HEART is envisioned to contribute to existing regional initiatives that focus on urban health, community-based initiatives, healthy cities and settings, and the broader goal of using an equity perspective on health and development work. Ample research\nhas shown that people live longer and healthier lives if\nthey eat well, live in decent housing, work at a job,\nenjoy safety from violence, avoid illegal drugs and excessive\nalcohol use, have access to basic medicines, and can\nturn to friends and family. This is the basic tenet underlying\nthe “Healthy Cities” movement, a worldwide initiative\nthat promotes quality-of-life factors that can help a\ncommunity of any size improve its social, physical, and\ncultural environment.
