The physical activity of referees accredited by CBF (Brazilian Confederation of Soccer) was video-recorded during twenty-nine official games of Paraná Championship (Brasil), Series A and B of the 2005/2006. Computerized video analysis was used to determine the time spent in 6 locomotor activities (standing still, walking, jogging, backwards running, running and sprint). The frequency and duration of each activity were recorded and these data were utilized to calculate the distance covered by the referee. Energy expenditure values were estimated, utilizing specific equations, from the time players spent in each motor activity. The referees observed in this study had a mean age of 38.9 ± 3.8 years, body mass of 86.1 ± 7.1 kg, stature of 1.80 ± 0.07 m and a body mass index of 26.5±0.6 kg·m-2. During match-play, referees covered an average distance of 9155.4±70.3 meters (8411 - 9765), with a mean energy expenditure of 734.7±65 kcal. This energy expenditure was significantly reduced in the second half: 359.9 ± 6.3 vs 374.7 ± 6.6 kcal (p = 0.006), and averaged to be moderate energy intensity (5 METs) with predominant utilization of the aerobic energy system. In total, during 67% of match-play the intensity was equal or lower than 3.8 METs and in 33% it was higher than 9.8 METs. The pattern of movement observed in the present study confirms that soccer refereeing may be considered as a highly intermittent exercise mode. The high to low-intensity activity ratio may be defined as 1:7.1. In conclusion, referees officiating in professional soccer matches in Brazil should perform a physical conditioning regime that provides the stamina required at this level and consume appropriate and adequate nutrition to meet the energetic demands for match-play. The work rate profiles of 11 international referees were assessed during 12 competitive matches at the 2003 FIFA Under-17 World Cup and then analysed using a bi-dimensional photogrammetric video analysis system based on direct lineal transformation (DLT) algorithms. In the first 15 min of matches, the referees were more active, performing more high-intensity exercise (P < 0.01) than in the first 15 min of the second half. During the second half of matches, the referees covered a shorter distance (P < 0.01), spent more time standing still (P < 0.05), and covered less ground cruising (P < 0.05), sprinting (P < 0.05), and moving backwards (P < 0.001) than in the first half. Also in the second 45 min, the distance of referees from infringements increased (P < 0.05) in the left attacking zone of the filed. There was also a decrease (P < 0.05) in performance in the period following the most high-intensity activity, compared with the mean for the 90 min. Time spent performing high-intensity activities during a match was not related to performance in the 12-min run (r2 = 0.30; P < 0.05), the 200-m sprint (r2 = 0.05; P < 0.05), or the 50-m sprint (r2 = 0.001; P < 0.05). The results of this study show that: (1) top-class referees experienced fatigue at different stages of the match, and (2) the typical field tests used by FIFA (two 50-m and 200-m sprints, followed by a 12-min run) are not correlated with match activities. football referees (n = 15) and assistant referees (n = 15) in international games and to examine whether high-intensity running (HIR) correlates to the referees' ability to keep up with play. Total distance covered (10.27 ± 0.90 vs. 6.76 ± 0.83 km) and HIR (1.92 ± 0.58 vs. 0.97 ± 0.22 km) was higher (P < 0.05) for referees than assistant referees, while sprinting distance was not different. Referees covered 0.89 ± 0.37 km by backwards running and assistant referees covered 1.54 ± 0.66 km by sideways running. Mean heart rate was higher (P < 0.05) for referees than assistant referees (150 ± 3 vs. 123 ± 3 b.p.m.), whereas blood lactate was not different. Backwards/sideways running decreased (P < 0.05) from the first to the last 15-min period for referees (49%) and assistant referees (42%), whereas HIR was unaltered. HIR was inversely correlated with the five highest distances from infringements in both halves (r = -0.60 and -0.58, P < 0.05). In conclusion, international match officials carry out an important amount of HIR throughout games, while low-intensity and unorthodox running activities are reduced during games. Referees performing the most high-intensity work are better to keep up with play. The match activities differ significantly between referees and assistant referees, which should be considered in training and testing procedures. Seven (7) of referees who officiated the 2012 Malaysian Cup matches were been chosen into this study. All seven matches from the tournament were recorded using Astro beyond decoder and were coding with SportCode Elite Software on the selected performance indicators (P.I) as main movement patterns variables. This movement patterns were categorized as forward walking, forward jogging, forward running, standing, backward walking, backward running and sidestep running. The results analyze the frequency and the total time from the executed movement patterns for correlation and regression analysis by using the Pearson correlation and linear regression test respectively. The Pearson correlation test have shown that there is significant correlation between three movement patterns and the total distance covered by the referees which are sidestep(r= 0.97, p=0.000, p<0.01), forward walking (r= 0.930, p=0.002, p<0.01), and forward running (r= 0.807, p=0.028, p<0.05). The linear regression test have shown a positive correlation between contributing factors of the movement patterns towards the total distance covered by the football referees where the total distance covered result is 132.161 + 2.012 (sidestep) - 4.575 (forward walking) + 0.570 (forward jogging) - 2.940 (forward running) + 1.404 (backward walking) + 3.328 (backward running). Hence, this study found that movement patterns that performed by referees are contributed towards the total distance covered by football referees during a match. Materials and Methods: were assessed 8 referees registered in the Federação Paulista de Futebol, mean age of 26.75±4.13 years, refereeing matches of the Sub-20 Paulista Championship held in the state of São Paulo. Their anthropometric variables and functional indexes were determined, and their displacement in the soccer field was taped for analysis. Results: The referees covered 9,351±1,022m during the first half of the match and a non-statistically significant shorter distance (p=0.133) during the second half. Walking and jogging were the most used types of displacement, amounting 31.41% and 43.70% of the total distance covered, respectively. Their mean HB at the beginning of the match, during the first and second halves were 135±3 beats per minute (bpm), 166±4bpm and 165±3bpm, respectively, and the mean VO2max determined in laboratory for 6 referees was 48.16±3.93ml. kg-1.min-1. Discussion: The referees cover distances similar to those covered by the soccer players. Forward walking and jogging were the most used type of displacement. They also showed moderate to high heart rate and oxygen-uptake, depending on their individual physical fitness.
