            "abstractNote": "A primary shortcoming of existing techniques for hree-dimensional (3D) model matching is the reliance on global information of the model’s structure. Models are matched in their entirety, depending on overall topology and geometry information. A currently open challenge is how to perform partial matching. Partial matching is important for finding similarities across part models with different global shape properties and for the segmentation and matching of data acquired from 3D scanners. This paper presents a Scale–Space feature extraction technique based on recursive decomposition of polyhedral surfaces into surface patches. The experimental results presented in this paper suggest that this technique can potentially be used to perform matching based on local model structure. In our previous work, Scale–Space decomposition has been used successfully to extract features from mechanical artifacts. Scale–Space techniques can be parameterized to generate decompositions that correspond to manufacturing, assembly or surface features relevant to mechanical design. One application of these technique is to support matching and content-based retrieval of solid models. This paper shows how a Scale–Space technique can extract features that are invariant with respect to the global structure of the model as well as small perturbations that 3D laser scanning process introduce. In order to accomplish this, we introduce a new distance function defined on triangles instead of points. We believe this technique offers a new way to control the feature decomposition process, which results in the extraction of features that are more meaningful from an engineering viewpoint. The new technique is computationally practical for use in indexing large models. Examples are provided that demonstrate effective feature extraction on 3D laser scanned models. In addition, a simple sub-graph isomorphism algorithm was used to show that the feature adjacency graphs, obtained through feature extraction, are meaningful descriptors of 3D CAD objects.             "abstractNote": "Optimal structural desingn generally deals with frame or shell structures where the optimization is limited to resizing of structural members to obtain optimum cross-sections or thicknesses. Shape optimization solves another class of problems involving continuous structural components where the optimum shape (the shape of the boundaries and the surfaces of the components) is determined. This report describes shape optimization of three-dimensional structural components. The finite element method of analysis is used employing the 20-noded isoparametric element. The objective function, mass, is minimized by the direct use of nonlinear mathematical programming, specifically the feasible direction method. Numerical shape representation and the selection of design variables are the most important aspects of the problem. The problem is addressed from a practical standpoint and techniques are presented to minimize the number of desingn variables. Isoparametric representation of the surfaces and the numerical superposition of shapes are discussed. These techniques are compared and demonstrated on simple cantilever beams and their minimum mass designs are obtained. In one example, the optimum shape of a non-uniform cross-sectinal beam is obtained under stress constraint. The final design has a crosssectional shape varying over the length of the beam which could not be predicted using the bending theory of beams. One major difficulty encountered in some problems was that the shape changes during the optimization process may require a change in the finite element mesh because the initial configuration of the finite element mesh may result in very distorted elements for the new shape. The analyis with a mesh containing distorted elements may not be possible at all or the results of the analysis may be inaccurate.",

            "abstractNote": "To fully exploit the valuable knowledge embedded in repositories of digital models, it is crucial to devise search engines capable of expressing high-level and advanced queries, which can effectively support the re-use of CAD models. The retrieval mechanism should be able to return not only global similarity measures among objects, but it should also be coupled with methods for the automatic identification of similar sub-parts in the query and retrieved models, possibly highlighting automatically the object differences. This paper describes a method for partial shape-matching able to recognize similar sub-parts of objects represented as 3D polygonal meshes. The geometry and the structure of the shapes are coupled in a descriptor that provides a flexible coding, grounded on solid mathematical theories, and that can be adapted to the user’s needs and to the context of applications. The matching framework for sub-part correspondence is achieved through a graph-matching technique, which builds the common sub-graphs between the two shapes and highlights the maximal sub-parts having similar structure and similar space distribution.",

            "abstractNote": "Emergence has been widely recognized as a significant phenomenon of visual reasoning in design. Despite its centrality as a cognitive phenomenon, research in emergence currently lacks a comprehensive theoretical foundation. A broadened view of design emergence that adds to the perceptual phenomenon of shape emergence in reflecting the way the design domains are conceptualized is proposed. An expanded theory of emergence in which visual cognition plays an important role is presented. Beginning with an attempt to broaden the perceptual perspectives of shape emergence, the process of cognitive emergence is defined. The duality of related perceptual and cognitive components provides a working basis for conceptualizing visual emergence in design. Antithetical to the idea of accidental emergence, it is proposed that emergence is guided and anticipated. We claim that it is the re-cognition of visual shapes and images in design that enables emergence. This kind of guidance function in emergence is termed ‘anticipated emergence’. We demonstrate how high-level domain knowledge of visual forms can be accommodated as cognitive content, and how this can contribute to establishing a cognitive basis for emergence.             "abstractNote": "In trying to solve multiobjective optimization problems, many traditional methods scalarize the objective vector into a single objective. In those cases, the obtained solution is highly sensitive to the weight vector used in the scalarization process and demands that the user have knowledge about the underlying problem. Moreover, in solving multiobjective problems, designers may be interested in a set of Pareto-optimal points, instead of a single point. Since genetic algorithms (GAs) work with a population of points, it seems natural to use GAs in multiobjective optimization problems to capture a number of solutions simultaneously. Although a vector evaluated GA (VEGA) has been implemented by Schaffer and has been tried to solve a number of multiobjective problems, the algorithm seems to have bias toward some regions. In this paper, we investigate Goldberg's notion of nondominated sorting in GAs along with a niche and speciation method to find multiple Pareto-optimal points simultaneously. The proof-of-principle results obtained on three problems used by Schaffer and others suggest that the proposed method can be extended to higher dimensional and more difficult multiobjective problems. A number of suggestions for extension and application of the algorithm are also discussed.",

            "abstractNote": "The application of standard Information Extraction techniques to Patent Analysis has several limitations partially due to the difference existing between patents and web pages, which are the object of the biggest majority of information search. Indeed, while in other fields customized processing techniques have been developed, the number of studies fully dedicated to patent text mining is very limited and the tools available on the market still require a relevant human workload. This paper presents an algorithm to identify the peculiarities of an invention through an automatic functional analysis of the patent text; as a result a ranked list of components and functions is provided as well as a selection of meaningful paragraphs disclosing the details of the invention. An example related to laser irradiation devices for medical treatment clarifies its basic steps.",

            "abstractNote": "Evolutionary computation is emerging as a new engineering computational paradigm, which may significantly change the present structural design practice. For this reason, an extensive study of evolutionary computation in the context of structural design has been conducted in the Information Technology and Engineering School at George Mason University and its results are reported here. First, a general introduction to evolutionary computation is presented and recent developments in this field are briefly described. Next, the field of evolutionary design is introduced and its relevance to structural design is explained. Further, the issue of creativity/novelty is discussed and possible ways of achieving it during a structural design process are suggested. Current research progress in building engineering systems’ representations, one of the key issues in evolutionary design, is subsequently discussed. Next, recent developments in constraint-handling methods in evolutionary optimization are reported. Further, the rapidly growing field of evolutionary multiobjective optimization is presented and briefly described. An emerging subfield of coevolutionary design is subsequently introduced and its current advancements reported. Next, a comprehensive review of the applications of evolutionary computation in structural design is provided and chronologically classified. Finally, a summary of the current research status and a discussion on the most promising paths of future research are also presented.             "abstractNote": "In this paper, we present a technique that uses a combination of the\ngenetic algorithm (GA) and the global criterion method to find the\noptimum, in the min-max sense, of a multiobjective optimization\ndesign problem with multiple constraints. The objectives may be\nconflicting and noncommensurable, and the technique can deal\nwith minimization and maximization problems (or a mixture of\nboth). The optimum, in the min-max sense, gives a solution that\ntreats all the objectives on terms of equal importance, and presents\nthe advantage of being very efficient and easy to implement.\nFurthermore, when the min-max approach is combined with the\nweighting method, we can generate the set of Pareto\n(nondominant) solutions for both convex and nonconvex\nproblems. Taking advantage of the floating point representation\nused for the GA, we could solve design problems that involve a\nmix of continuous, discrete and integer design variables. This\ntechnique was tested with multiobjective engineering design\nproblems found in the literature, and our results were compared\nwith traditional mathematical programming techniques that use\nother search strategies.",

As the dialectical approach has shown its efficiency in problem solving, the starting point of our work is the use of contradiction in problem formulation stage. In this article, we analyse the possibility to use information brought by a Design of Experiments (DoE) to formulate a contradiction. Constraint Satisfaction Problem is employed to present information brought by the DoE. To use the dialectical approach, we define the concept of the Generalised Contradiction (GC). In the framework of DoE data, we show how to formulate a GC, and propose an algorithm able to identify OTSM-TRIZ System of Contradictions. Results and perspectives are discussed.",

            "abstractNote": "A method to find optimal topology and shape of structures is presented. With the first the optimal distribution of an assigned mass is found using an approach based on homogenisation theory, that seeks in which elements of a meshed domain it is present mass; with the second the discontinuous boundaries are smoothed. The problem of the optimal topology search has an ON/OFF nature and has suggested the employment of genetic algorithms. Thus in this paper a genetic algorithm has been developed, which uses as design variables, in the topology optimisation, the relative densities (with respect to effective material density) 0 or 1 of each element of the structure and, in the shape one, the coordinates of the keypoints of changeable boundaries constituted by curves. In both the steps the aim is that to find the variable sets producing the maximum stiffness of the structure, respecting an upper limit on the employed mass. The structural evaluations are carried out with a FEM commercial code, linked to the algorithm. Some applications have been performed and results compared with solutions reported in literature.
