"abstractNote": "ABSTRACT In this essay, I employ recent queer theory and queer science-fiction criticism to argue that the alien body can be used to represent utopian ideals of queerness and to challenge heteronormativity and its related systems of power. I discuss the short stories “Bloodchild” by Octavia E. Butler and “With Delicate Mad Hands” by James Tiptree, Jr., as two texts that imagine alternate worlds and intimacies in order to critique sex/gender systems in various ways. I argue that these texts queer the alien body and the alien/human relationship, and by doing so also queer the very impulse for space exploration. The generic conventions of space exploration—layered by race, imperialism, and desire—are subverted by these authors to reveal instead a utopian desire for queer futurity.",

"abstractNote": "This paper explores Octavia Butler's \"Clay's Ark\" as it articulates a parallel between the category of animality and a failure to recognize other humans as kin. Butler's work interrogates the idea of categorical exclusion implied by the human/animal boundary in order to challenge the very logic of discrimination rather than merely to challenge particular examples of discrimination as sexist, racist, etc. Using Deleuze and Guattari's model of subjectivity as becoming rather than being, I examine how Butler literalizes their example of becoming animal by imagining a virus that transforms humans into seeming human/animal hybrids. In the novel, humans who resist the change cannot survive, while those who embrace their new subjectivity represent a more humane future. The paper concludes with a discussion of the new kind of subject described in Butler's novel, one that recognizes boundaries of kinship usually disavowed by human culture, transforming not only what it means to be a subject but also our conception of ethics.",

Butler and Assia Djebar. It focuses on the convergence of two related elements in Butler's \"Kindred\" and Djebar's \"La femme sans sépulture\": the need to resist historical amnesia and to speak the unspeakable. Both authors foreground the contemporary legacy of traumatic national pasts and the treatment of women's agency and desire under situations of extreme violence. Both texts enact similar tactics to represent the historical unrepresentable through fiction and to make feminist, womanist, and postcolonial interventions into the construction of the nation as imagined community.",

"abstractNote": "In Octavia E. Butler's \"Xenogenesis trilogy\" (1987-89) aliens seek to interbreed with the survivors of a nuclear war to remove a conflict between humanity's genetic traits: intelligence and hierarchical thinking. Extant criticism shows \"Xenogenesis\" contributing to debates about race and identity politics. Race does not evaporate upon contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence; rather, race persists not in a sense that makes \"Xenogenesis\" a neo-slave narrative, but in other participations in the African- /// American literary tradition and assertions of black cultural heritage. Gender also persists upon contact with Butler's aliens. \"Xenogenesis\" does not theorize gender as an essentialism; rather, it ascribes behaviour to genetics in order to critique hierarchical thinking.",
