"abstractNote": "A growing body of evidence suggests that relevant, well-designed simulations can make a valuable contribution to students' experiences in training and education and go some way toward meeting the expectations of students who have grown up with immersive, computer-mediated games. Within universities, many barriers exist that may prevent the effective development of this work, in part because of the nature of the traditional roles of both academics and developers who undertake these activities. Through a discussion of the experiences of working within a successful cross-functional team, the authors discuss the practice of developing an innovative eLearning simulation tool for an undergraduate course and how the challenges of combining the developer and educationalist roles were overcome. By synthesizing theories in educational philosophy and game design processes, a conceptual framework for ensuring quality in creative education projects is outlined that may be applied to the development of eLearning and adaptive game projects.",

"abstractNote": "The development of information systems and software applications increasingly needs to deliver culturally rich and affective experiences for user groups. In this paper, we explore how the collaborative practices across different expert groups can enable this experiential dimension of use to be integrated into the development of a software product. In an empirical study of computer games development-an arena in which the novelty and richness of the user experience is central to competitive success-we identify the challenges of conceptualizing and realizing a desired user experience when it cannot be readily specified in an initial design template, nor represented within the expertise of existing groups. Our study develops a theoretical framework to address these challenges. Through this framework, we are able to show how achieving a desired user experience requires developer groups to not only work across the boundaries that arise from specialized expertise, but also across wider fields centred on cultural production and software development, respectively. We find that their ability to do this is supported by distinctive \"envisioning practices\" that sustain an emerging shared \"vision\" for each game. The key research contributions that we then make are (a) grounding envisioning practices as a means of theorizing the collaborative practices centred on conceptualizing the user experience; (b) identifying how these practices are interwoven with the \"producing practices\" of software development, thus enabling collaboration to span expert groups and disparate fields; and (c) theorizing the role of vision as an emerging conceptual boundary object in these practices. Every element of the research process is affected if the research questions call for team-based data collection and interpretation over a lengthy period of time. It focuses on the processes used to conduct the research that were affected by the need for a multidisciplinary research team. A framework is presented for thinking about managing such a project. Challenges that were encountered within this framework are identified. Mechanisms used for confronting those challenges are also described. The objective is to help researchers who are considering launching interdisciplinary, longitudinal studies of organizational processes as they plan and manage those pursuits.",

"abstractNote": "Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) is becoming increasingly prevalent. Its participant-players are in millions and its revenues are in billions of dollars. There is a gap in how effectiveness DGBL software is to encourage students in learning and increase their motivation in learning process. This paper aims to discuss children and teenagers' education with DGBL software and the motivation design for DGBL software. The author also identify and discuss elements of the motivation model which are adopted from ARCS Model and game features from History Multimedia Interactive Educational Game (HMIEG) for History learning. A motivation design model for DGBL software is presented, which can be employed as an efficient and effective tool for promoting learning process. At the end, the analysis of testing results of DGBL software as teaching and learning tools is also reviewed.",

"abstractNote": "Serious games, especially educational video games, have proliferated in recent years. Despite this, there are very few methodological proposals capable of addressing the design of all the key elements of an educational video game. To deal with this discrepancy, this paper presents a methodology divided into five phases: startup, design, production, test, and post-production; focusing on the design phase of educational games. The design phase structures an educational video game in acts, scenes, scenarios, actions and dialogues; and defines the modeling tasks and generated artifacts which have to be carried out in each step of the process.",

"abstractNote": "In our current society, with plenty of distractions, traditional methods for learning or performing tasks are losing in effectiveness. Serious games have great potential to replace or complement these traditional methods, because they can take benefit of the intrinsic motivation of people to play and have fun. However, creating serious games that effectively achieve their serious purpose is not obvious. The paper discusses some key aspects required to take into consideration in order to come to more effective serious games. First, we identify and justify requirements for the development process, being tools to assist the multidisciplinary teams in the development, as well as dedicated methods, guidelines and knowledge, where it is a requirement that the methods and guidelines should explicitly deal with the interdisciplinary character of serious games. Next, we argue for two important aspects for the games themselves: the use of some form of personalization or adaptation to the target audience, and the incorporation of an explicit debriefing phase.",

"abstractNote": "Evaluation is an essential part of any software development process as it helps compare intended with actual outcomes and identify possible improvements. To do this, it is important to understand how users interact with the product. As interactions with the interdisciplinary product category of Serious Games can be multifaceted, pure text-logging of gameplay actions is not always sufficient to cover all aspects needed to satisfy researchers' needs, for instance how the user feels or what s/he thinks while carrying out a certain action. For this reason, studies evaluating serious games are increasingly applying multimodal methods in recent years. This makes it important to establish theoretical foundations considering the changing research landscape. This paper presents a theoretical framework for multimodal Serious Games evaluation based on a review of relevant research.",

"abstractNote": "Assessment is crucial to both learners, to receive feedback on their progress, and educators, to evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching. Serious games (SGs) usually offer an assessment system. However, if the majority of educators agree that using an SG increases the motivation, learning and retention of their students, many of them would not trust its assessment to verify that the learning goals have been met. To do so, they would use a more conventional method, such as a paper-based test. We believe the main reasons for that are: the teacher's lack of ownership of the game and the rigidness of the SG itself as it usually cannot be changed by the teacher. In this paper, we present an assessment engine capable of overcoming these issues. The engine is used both by SG developers and teachers and acts as a link between the two. An example will be presented to illustrate its features and data from a pilot study with SG developers will be analysed. The engine is not only useful to teachers and developers regarding assessment but, due to its core design, it also offers the possibility of learning analytics.",

"abstractNote": "Leaning by game can promote the students' learning motivation. Educational game design involves programming competence, visual design and educational profession. Nevertheless, most of the teachers do not have the programming skills. At the same time, almost of game development tools are not designed for educational use. As a result, the purpose of this study is to develop an educational game authoring system for helping the teachers to design Web-based instructional game for their students. A monopoly game project designed by this system is presented and verified for assessing the suitability of this authoring tool.",
