"abstractNote": "THe thermal behavior of an urban surface is crucial to understand, but it is difficult to predict using\nconventional measurement or modeling approaches. In this study, an integ\nrated method is proposed for\nevaluating urban energy exchanges with an open-air scale model of a buildi\nng–street canyon surface array.\nThe technique, which potentially combines the flexibility of modeling wi\nth the reliability of empirical\nobservation under natural turbulence and radiative loading, is tested in\nhot, arid summer conditions to\ngauge its ability for reproducing surface–atmosphere energy fluxes that\nare representative of diurnal pat-\nterns in actual urban settings. After identifying the inertial sublayer,\nwhich is created above the scaled\nroughness array at a point near its downwind edge, roughness parameters ut\nilized in the calculation of\nturbulent sensible heat flux are determined for two different array confi\ngurations of varying frontal area\ndensity and compared with existing data from field studies and morphometr\nic models. For each geometric\nconfiguration, the relative sharing of radiant energy between storage an\nd turbulent fluxes is compared with\npublished findings obtained by conventional methods, as is the diurnal pa\nttern of each component flux.\nRoughness parameters that are obtained conform to the expected ranges, as\ndo daytime and overall daily\nfluxes and flux ratios. Overall, radiation absorption and heat storage ar\ne higher in the array with deeper\ncanyons, and in both arrays the share of sensible heat channeled into the at\nmosphere is both higher in\nmagnitude and later in reaching its peak intensity than that which is store\nd within the scaled urban fabric.\nThis thermal time lag, when evaluated by fitting data to a published model f\nor parameterizing heat storage\nfrom net radiation, shows a high correlation with hysteresis behavior in a\nctual cities",

"abstractNote": "Accurate air temperature observations in urban areas are important for meteorology and energy demand planning. They are indispensable to study the urban heat island effect and the adverse effects of high temperatures on human health. However, the availability of temperature observations in cities is often limited. Here we show that relatively accurate air temperature information for the urban canopy layer can be obtained from an alternative, nowadays omnipresent source: smartphones. In this study, battery temperatures were collected by an Android application for smartphones. A straightforward heat transfer model is employed to estimate daily mean air temperatures from smartphone battery temperatures for eight major cities around the world. The results demonstrate the enormous potential of this crowdsourcing application for real-time temperature monitoring in densely populated areas.",

"abstractNote": "Description\n Contents\n Resources\n About the Authors\n\n The European Union (EU) has emerged as a leading governing body in the international struggle to govern climate change. The transformation that has occurred in its policies and institutions has profoundly affected climate change politics at the international level and within its 27 Member States. But how has this been achieved when the EU comprises so many levels of governance, when political leadership in Europe is so dispersed and the policy choices are especially difficult? Drawing on a variety of detailed case studies spanning the interlinked challenges of mitigation and adaptation, this volume offers an unrivalled account of how different actors wrestled with the complex governance dilemmas associated with climate policy making. Opening up the EU's inner workings to non-specialists, it provides a perspective on the way that the EU governs, as well as exploring its ability to maintain a leading position in international climate change politics.",

"abstractNote": "dapting to climate change is a critical problem facing humanity. This involves reconsidering our lifestyles, and is linked to our actions as individuals, societies and governments. This book presents the latest science and social science research on whether the world can adapt to climate change. Written by experts, both academics and practitioners, it examines the risks to ecosystems, demonstrating how values, culture and the constraining forces of governance act as barriers to action. As a state-of-the-art review of science and a holistic assessment of adaptation options, it is essential reading for those concerned with responses to climate change, especially researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and graduate students. Significant features include historical, contemporary, and future insights into adaptation to climate change; coverage of adaptation issues from different perspectives: climate science, hydrology, engineering, ecology, economics, human geography, anthropology and political science; and contributions from leading researchers and practitioners from around the world. An interview with Neil Adger on adapting to climate change:",

"abstractNote": "To bridge the gaps between traditional mesoscale modelling and microscale modelling, the National Centerfor Atmospheric Research, in collaboration with other agencies and research groups, has developed an integrated urbanmodelling system coupled to the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model as a community tool to address urbanenvironmental issues. The core of this WRF/urban modelling system consists of the following: (1) three methods with different degrees of freedom to parameterize urban surface processes, ranging from a simple bulk parameterization to asophisticated multi-layer urban canopy model with an indoor–outdoor exchange sub-model that directly interacts withthe atmospheric boundary layer, (2) coupling to fine-scale computational fluid dynamic Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokesand Large-Eddy simulation models for transport and dispersion (T&D) applications, (3) procedures to incorporate high-resolution urban land use, building morphology, and anthropogenic heating data using the National Urban Database andAccess Portal Tool (NUDAPT), and (4) an urbanized high-resolution land data assimilation system. This paper providesan overview of this modelling system; addresses the daunting challenges of initializing the coupled WRF/urban model andof specifying the potentially vast number of parameters required to execute the WRF/urban model; explores the modelsensitivity to these urban parameters; and evaluates the ability of WRF/urban to capture urban heat islands, complexboundary-layer structures aloft, and urban plume T&D for several major metropolitan regions. Recent applications of thismodelling system illustrate its promising utility, as a regional climate-modelling tool, to investigate impacts of futureurbanization on regional meteorological conditions and on air quality under future climate change scenarios.",

"abstractNote": "In 2050 the global fraction of urban population will grow up to over 69%, which means that around 6.3 \nbillion people are expected to live in urban areas [1]. Improving the living conditions for this population is a \nmajor future task in a world under changing climate. \nUrban Heat Island (UHI) describes the tendency for an urbanized area to remain warmer than its \nsurroundings and thus generating its own microclimate. Next to health problems through rising \ntemperature itself, stands the effect of accelerating photochemical reaction rates, in turn worsening the \ninner-city air quality [2]. Modeling the link between increasing temperature and air quality in an urban \nenvironment within a complex topographical terrain, is the innovative approach within this study. \nThe Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) is an instrument to simulate and assess this phenomenon based on boundary conditions from observations and global climate models. This study deals as preliminary work for air quality modeling and is conducted for the area of Stuttgart, South West Germany. Different urban parameterization schemes are tested and results are compared against ground measurements.",

However, the application of urban climatic knowledge has only led to low-impact urban planning decision-making. This is especially true in high-density cities in developing countries. Thus, there is an urgent need to seek ways to quickly collate urban climatic information for planning in a format that is user-friendly for planners. This study has identified ways to promote the use of urban climatic knowledge in planning. By utilizing readily-available data, the paper introduces a method that focuses on urban planning using an urban climatic map (UCMap). A UCMap provides a visual and spatial information platform for the planner-friendly Geographical Information System (GIS). By focusing on Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the study first defines the urban climatic issues in the area. It then introduces the key methodology of urban climatic mapping and elaborates on general urban-climatic-based planning advice for planners using a UCMap. Lastly, it identifies sensitive areas and provides planning recommendations that can be easily tested and applied by city planners. The critical importance of urban greenery and coverage, urban air paths and open spaces, water bodies and rivers, and building morphology and layout have been highlighted visually and spatially for planners.",
