It begins by discussing Eastman's response to the Bolshevik Revolution and his relations with Leon Trotsky; it concludes with Eastman departing emphatically with Trotsky over the validity of dialectical reasoning and the nature of Stalinism. The middle section of the article reconstructs the debates between Eastman and Sidney Hook over Marxism and Hegelianism. The European response to Eastman's writings is also treated, as is the negative response of the contemporary New Left. Explains why Hegelian Marxism--the version brought to America by Herbert Marcuse and the Frankfurt School 'emigres,'--failed to find a receptive audience among Old Left radical theorists of the 1930's.",

The combination of serious subject matter and a new style of scenic art made the Washington Square Players successful, but it closed in 1918, when World War I depleted the supply of actors. The article examines the guild's offerings during the early years, which included the works of foreign dramatists including William Shakespeare, Leonid Andreyev, George Bernard Shaw, Fedor Dostoevsky, Henrik Ibsen, Anton Chekov, and Leo Tolstoy. However, by the end of the guild's first decade, domestic dramatists such as George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, and Oscar Hammerstein were included. By the 1930's, the guild's revolutionary status was lost, and it became a \"de facto theatrical establishment\" and the gold standard for other new theatrical groups. The article also explores the guild's role in the preservation of theatrical documents, including scripts, playbills, photographs, reviews, correspondence, and artifacts.",

The trope of a motor in the soul suggests the possibility of representing a \"multiplied body,\" continuous effortless movement, and repetition simulating spontaneity. The friendship between Gold, the Jewish advocate of proletarian literature, McKay, the black Jamaican literary traditionalist, and Freytag-Loringhoven, the reactionary anti-Semite and racist, illuminates how the lived experience of race, class, national identity, and aesthetic commitment shaped the development of Greenwich Village modernism.",
