The web site aims to connect the work of New Zealand scientists to teachers and students in schools by grouping a wide range of related resources into contextual themes. Teachers were provided with professional support to develop units of work that used the site. Questionnaires, interviews, observations and written evidence of planning units of work were used to evaluate aspects of the SLH. Teachers valued the inclusion of current NZ science research and incorporated examples of scientists work in their planning, however integration of aspects of the SLH within the school units of work were limited. The initiative was developed and rolled out to more than 400 schools over the period 2000?2004. A research team worked with 200+ primary and secondary schools over three years, supporting them in developing new initiatives in science, and monitoring the impact on school and classroom practice, and student outcomes. The research effort underpinning the development phase included the development and validation of a set of components describing effective teaching, the refinement of a school and teacher change strategy, the development of instruments to monitor teacher classroom practice and a variety of student outcomes, and the development of insights into the change process using questionnaires, observations, and interviews across four years. This paper describes the project and its major outcomes, and raises a number of issues concerning the nature of school and teacher change, pedagogy, school and community, and student learning, and the way these interact. A number of research issues are raised by the size and developmental nature of the project, the range of research methods, and the different audiences served by the research. The National Youth Agency and Changemakers (2008) ‘NESTA: Youth-led\nthe organisations they join and create as the UK seeks new opportunities to meet the future. There has been little systematic analysis however of how and where young people innovate, or of how that innovation can be best supported and developed.\nThe focus of our research is youth-led innovation, whereby young people instigate potential solutions to a problem, often one that they have identified or defined themselves, and take responsibility for developing and implementing a solution. Our report analyses the research to date on youth-led innovation and identifies evidence of impact. It highlights that opportunities to participate in innovation increase young people’s likelihood to innovate in the future and what helps or hinders youth-led innovation. We offer proposals for encouraging more young people to take part in youth-led innovation, which were developed with focus groups of young innovators and organisations that work with them.
